That's interesting. If he pitches all year in 2014 like he did the past couple of months in 2013 he could really help a team.

Begs the question of what Cleveland does in response now. Should be an interesting offseason for a bunch of teams this year.

Seems to me that Cleveland will try to resign him. He pitched poorly most of his starts there, before really turning it around the last couple of months last season. I watched a couple of those later starts in which the announcers gave a lot of credit to the Indians pitching coach for straightening out his mechanics. To the extent that is true, if I'm the Indians GM, I think I want the two of them to continue working together.

He pitched extremely well after his first four starts of the 2013 season. From April 29 to Sept 29, he had an ERA of 2.61 over 165.2 innings in 28 starts. He had 169 strikeouts and 69 walks over that span. Opposing batters hit .237/.312/.352 against him.

Cleveland will try to re-sign him - this isn't a surprise that he declined the option - he can get a lot more money after his really good season and Cleveland will give it to him

If he continues the wau he has pitched he will be a good pickup. I also would be suprised if Cleveland doesn't offer him something else if they cant find anything elsewhere.

If Cleveland thinks either Ubaldo (or their staff in conjunction with Ubaldo) can replicate this last years production, then pull the trigger, if not, then stay away with a 10 foot pole. Really isn't any middle ground if you are Cleveland.

id rather see Smyly / Alveraz in the rotation than ubaldo and his ridicolous contract hes going to want for a half of a year

Alverez is NOT a major league caliber starter. And Smyly is far from a minor leaguer. Were you just coming heavy for affect with that previous ridiculous comment? Or do you know of a potential high end power pitcher in Detroits system that Im not aware of? (Detroits not really in the market for starters, at the moment, anyway)

You never know, they could get sneaky with a Scherzer trade and pick up some shiny pitching prospects.

Alveraz did pretty well as a fill in starter this past year..

I think the major worry with Ubaldo he is echoing is that he could very easily be fools gold and revert back to the 5 + Eras we saw previously with him in Cleveland. I don't think that is exactly an indefensible point of view imo.

Unmmmm.... His era was pushing 6.

look at his starts

he would be 2nd behind Smyly to join the rotation, obviously.

but like i said in other threads i believe they will trade scherzer and bring back many more younger arms.

I wouldn't want to see a huge investment in him. Not for any serious length of timd. But my objection is with comparing him to Detroits minor league talent. Because that's just silly.
