Higher taxes is the only difference. The tax cuts that have been extended across the board over the last 10 years or so will be allowed to expire Jan 1st.

For families making $75K per year that will be about $3500 per year in increased federal taxes.

Romney would have extended those tax cuts and attempted to make them permanent.

Obama has made it clear that they will be allowed to expire.

I think you may have a couple of different taxes confused.

The tax cuts that have been extended for the last ten years would for most continue as proposed by Obama.

Obama wants to let it expire for individuals earning over $200K and families earning over $250K and extend it one year for all others. A family making $75K would not be effected at all by this.

The congress republicans though insist on extending it for all and this is what Obama said he would veto. As sent by congress it will cost us an additional $100B a year or 1Trillion over the next decade.

In addition these cuts as created by Bush are heavily tilted to the rich. See below. Obama only wants to return those making over $200k/250k to what it was during Clinton's presidency. These cuts were clearly unfair and unaffordable.

Now there was also the " social security tax holiday". It was supposed to be for one year. This was created two years ago with bi-partisan support in the congress and then extended last year with great opposition in the republican congress. This amounts to $1000 a year for someone earning $50k or $1500 for a family earning $75k. This comes to a little less then $39 a week (edit: Bad math, $29 a week is correct) on your FDIC withdrawal at $75K.

The problem is the federal government is having to pay over $100K (edit again: 100B not K) a year to fund this and it was only meant to infuse more money into the economy when it was stagnant.
Obama did not include this in his proposed 2013 budget but it was not in Romney's either. The congress would never let it pass again and it is probably one of the more responsible stands they have taken.
