Just past 12 weeks to the day from when he had surgery on his back, Tiger Woods will return to competitive golf next week at the PGA Tour event outside of Washington, D.C.

Woods announced the decision Friday afternoon via his Facebook account, acknowledging that he will be "a bit rusty'' for the Quicken Loans National at Congressional Country Club.

The tournament, in its eighth year, benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation and has a new title sponsor. That likely has something to do with Woods' decision to try and play.

And so does getting ready for the Open Championship next month at Royal Liverpool, where he won the last of his three Claret Jugs in 2006.

"After a lot of therapy I have recovered well and will be supporting my foundation next week at the Quicken Loans National,'' Woods said in the Facebook post. "I've just started to hit full shots but it's time to take the next step. I will be a bit rusty but I want to play myself back into competitive shape. Excited for the challenge ahead.''

Woods, 38, had a procedure called a microdiscectomy on March 31 to alleviate a pinched nerve in his back. He had played just four times in 2014, with lackluster results. Woods had back problems late last year, but they first became apparent again on March 2 during the final round of the Honda Classic. He withdrew following 13 holes.

It was just stated that he was taking full swings ...now he can play in a match?
Tony Romo has not even been allowed to take snaps in practice games yet.

I always follow a simple rule ..50% of everything Tiger tells you is bullshit.

Why stop @ Tiger...you would do well to apply that theory to most everything you hear in the media.

I'm a Tiger fan but could not give flip about all the injury details...when he's out there, he's out there...until then...out of sight, out of mind.

Yep - who cares really? I would also not compare it to someone like Romo since rushing an NFL player back can have far more serious consequences than a golfer returning too soon.

Bottom line - he will play next weekend which should make everyone here (and the public in general) very happy either because they want to see him play or because they want to badmouth him & hope that he fails. It is that simple.

Agreed, and if TW wants to play the British he sure wants to get out there and start grinding as soon as he can, a rusty TW is still better than most.

Should make everyone else in the field feel better. It means there will be fewer of the "mashed potatoes" idiots on their hole, and the media will be swarming Tiger and not the actual leaders. Less stress.

I see a mashed potato rule coming down the pike soon. Instant ejection.

I would love that. Extend it to all of those guys. The "get in the hole" as soon as its hit, en sech.

Yep...don't you? I play better than my score every weekend...eventually the score will catch up to my game!! LOL...I wish!

+3 ain't half bad...for awhile it look like he might have trouble breaking 80!

Yep & the weird thing was that his two playing partners - Day & Speith - had virtually identical scores & all rallied at the end to minimize the damage.

Really.....I can see TW struggling, but didn't Rory torch that course for his USO win or am I thinking of another track?

Speith needs to take a break, I feel like he's played every week! To turn back the clock to 20 or whatever he is...hell at 38 into mid 40s we played 36 a day sometimes.

Helluva good final round going on right now. The galleries are hilarious though in comparison to when Tiger was out there.

Serious question. At what point does Tiger Woods become irrelevant?

I have to say that I never seen that "line of site" ruling before.

Guy is in the rough and has to go over the trees to get to the green. But his view of the pin is block by the grandstand so he gets to move to the right, nearer to the fairway until he can see the pin plus 2 club lengths.

That is a pretty generous rule considering the grandstand was not physically in the way of ball flight or swing.

I'm just enjoying hearing the announcers do all they can to put a positive spin on things. You can almost feel them getting emotionally hurt when Tiger is not playing well.

When Tiger says " my score does not reflect how well I played" ...that is just music to my ears.
