Chad Wheeler Reportedly Transported to Hospital After Altercation with Police
USC Trojans junior offensive lineman Chad Wheeler reportedly had to be taken to a hospital following an altercation with Los Angeles police officers at an apartment Saturday.
According to NBC News, the incident occurred Saturday morning:
Los Angeles officers responded to a man at around 8:45 a.m. PT (11:45 a.m. ET) who was possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol, punching walls and windows, and injuring his hands inside an apartment in South Los Angeles near the USC campus, said the law enforcement sources close to the investigation.
Sources told Blankstein that police officers "fired beanbag rounds at him after he got into an altercation with them" but did not disclose the details of what led to the disturbance.
Blankstein added that Wheeler was not arrested but is being held under private protective custody at the hospital "for psychiatric evaluation."
USC head coach Clay Helton told reporters at the team's practice in preparation for the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl matchup with Wisconsin that Wheeler was absent while dealing with a "personal issue".
Wheeler is a three-year starter at USC, though he missed the final five games in 2014 after suffering a torn ACL in a matchup against Utah and missed this season's contest against Utah after suffering a concussion.
Pretty sad. I have a feeling he's been dealing with a few things all year. He had many games where he had multiple inexcusable penalties. I forget the game but you could hear Helton yell at him saying you're killing us Out there. I think he might have played his last game of football. Hopefully he gets his life on track. I hear his toddler was in the apartment when he was punching the walls.
