Guthrie pushed the O's in a corner. He would not agree to the same contract he signed with the Rockies, and would probably have won in arbitration. Had to be traded at the last minute before the arbitration hearing. Guthrie knew what he was doing. He obviously wanted out of Baltimore.

Getting Hammel and Lindstrom for Guthrie under those circumstances was pretty good. And Lindstrom got us Joe Saunders.

The trade was still a net gain by about 3 wins even considering the fact that Hammel has struggled this year:

Hammel in 2012-13 combined: 4.33 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 4.21 FIP, 3.1 fWAR / 2.6 rWAR
Lindstrom (2012 with the Orioles only): 2.72 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 3.48 FIP, 0.3 fWAR / 0.7 rWAR
Saunders (2012 with the Orioles only): 3.63 ERA, 1.28 WIP, 3.77 FIP, 0.8 fWAR / 0.7 rWAR
