Then that is your problem, you equate a rival to a brotherhood.
It's a pretty simple concept simple minded one. Brothers often fight, BUT, when kids from another family pick on that rival brother, then the brothers stick up for each other. Then when some kids from the other side of the tracks come into the neighborhood, then those bickering neighbors band together to fight off the boys from the other side of the tracks. Then when they end up at the same high school, and the school's rival comes to town, those bickering boys band together as a team to defeat that rival. Then some boys from each of those teams both end up at the state school and become teammates and fight the next state over's team, and then when a fan of a team from a rival conference disses one of those teams, it's not unnatural for the other team's fans to stick up for their rival school. And then when the Olympics comes along, players from many different teams from many different conferences join together to play on the same team representing their country. And when the aliens from out space show up wanting to wipe out the human race, then all of those rival countries join together to fight them off. Then when a Federation of planets is formed and the Klingons come along, different alien races join together to fight them, and so on and so far.

Not a hard concept to understand.

If you want to equate it to normal life then you can stretch your definition of the dumb sibling rivalry misconception since it isn’t a sibling rivalry, it is sibling competition.

No fan that has a rival can ever feel joy when that team wins.

It's not joy, it's knowing that the rival winning helps your own team when you beat that rival.

Ask a Husky fan how much more satisfying it was beating the Spartans today being MSU was ranked as high as they were.
