Penn State, Nebraska, Michigan, Texas, Washington, and Tennessee.

I think that covers it. Serious drought with some of these with no end in sight.

Which teams here have a chance to be national title contenders the quickest?

Texas has been "down" for what, 4 years? That's not really long. Most programs are down for like a decade or two

Of your list there, to be fair, Michigan deserves to be on there no more than Oklahoma. Since they booted Rich Rod and hired Fatboy Hoke, they have all of 1 less win overall than Oklahoma while winning a BCS bowl more recently, so you may need to take a look at your Sooners for this list if Michigan is there.

As far as Penn State goes, they could very well be back very quickly once the sanctions are ended. They brought in arguably their best QB since Kerry Collins with their 2013 class along with one of the top TEs in the nation. Their 2014 class is already full of athletes at the skill positions. It's not like the classes are gonna get worse as they get closer to the end of the sanctions, and I could see their 2016 recruiting class being amazing, as it will be the first class to play in a bowl game then. O'Brien is also a fantastic head coach who is doing a great job keeping the spirit alive there in Happy Valley.

My old man and grandfather both went to Carnegie Tech -now Carnegie/Mellon - and would never fail, every fawking year, to recount every fawking play of the Tartans 'epic' victory over Notre Dame in 1926.

On November 28, 1926, the 6–2 Carnegie Tech football team shut out Knute Rockne's undefeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish 19–0 at Forbes Field. It would be the only loss for the Irish all season and only the second time they allowed a touchdown that season. The game was ranked the fourth-greatest upset in college football history by ESPiN.

Wonder where Appy State's win over Michigan ranks on that list. :laugh3:

Texas played for a title in 2009. One of these programs is not like the others...

I'll play with this list I guess...

Programs in their current state-
Texas
Michigan
Nebraska
Washington
Tennessee
Penn State

Now lets look at who's jobs are on the line out of that list... Only Mack Brown/Bo Pelini. If they both get fired;

Texas
Nebraska
Michigan
Washington
Tennessee
Penn State

If Mack stays at Texas and Nebraska has a new coach, it's a toss up for #1. Texas isn't all that bad off with Mack as long as Mack keeps making good staff decisions. The DC seems to be working, he just needs to fix his recruiting etc.

there's a difference between getting talent just to get talent, and getting talent that actually fits your system

that being said

there's still no excuse for Texas to not win 10+ games every year with the amount of talent they bring in
