Considered as a power 5 opponent? Shame on the Power 5 conferences for thinking BYU is not worthy

they usually have a solid schedule. it looks pretty weak the rest of the yr. it sucks because they look like a talented team. they wont have many chances to prove themselves

They certainly should be considered one. Dumb to leave them out. Now with that said BYU needs to get their butts in a conference.

BYU rolled the dice at going independent. The school for which that would have worked much better (I think) is Hawaii. Provo just isn't the vacation destination that teams will line up to travel to to play a game.

It's not like BYU is running a schedule like ND.

ND has earned their exception.

BYU has backed out of conference alignments in the past and still doesnt schedule like ND. Not horrible, but definitely not ND like.

Theres no shame in not considering them P5 equals because they arent.

Why should they be...they were a mountain west team for 12 years b4 going independent and a WAC team since 1962 before that...50 years of not being a P5 team is not wiped out by a few years of independence.

If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...

The only year they have finished undefeated was the sham 1984 year when they beat exactly 0 EOY ranked teams...

BYU is getting a lot of love for a couple of clubbings of Texas...but lots of teams have beaten 7-5 P5 Teams.

Yeah the year UW backed out of playing them in a bowl for a bigger paycheck. :L

Would have killed BYU.

I remember that Holiday Bowl. Robbie Bosco played on a broken leg and beat a Michigan team that ended the season 6-6. I don't remember any movement to replace Michigan as the opponent slated to play against BYU though.

Several schools passed on the bowl because of its early time period, citing interference with final exams. Eventually, the Holiday Bowl picked the 6-5 Michigan Wolverines

We were one of them that passed on it. We went on to thump #2 Oklahoma.

Wow - academics playing a role in athletics decisions. Oh how I long for those halcyon days.

I still preferred seeing an undefeated BYU team get the nod as national champions to a 11-1-1 Colorado team in 1990 (that needed a fifth down to win one of their games) share the national championship with Georgia Tech.

On that note, you will be glad to know that my computer chose Washington over Miami(Fl) in 1991.

So did anyone who knows football!

It would have been a good game for a half. UW would have won by 10+. :suds:

I recall the real reason being a bigger paycheck, but it's been a long time.

You should be happy to know that even Barry Switzer thought giving the NC to BYU was a gift for their coach and undeserving.

It was a feel good story.

But what if UW did play them in the holiday bowl, thumped them and OK won their bowl?

Sooners would have been declared champs anyway.

I'm happy with UWs season and their bowl win. People who know football realize who the best was. :yahoo:

If I recall correctly, Michigan was in the game late. Hence the heroics of a one-legged Robbie Bosco to win the game. According to Wikipedia, BYU scored on a Robbie Bosco to Kelly Smith pass with 1:23 left to take a 24-17 lead. The Cougars then sealed the game with a Marv Allen interception.

I certainly remember it being a great game to watch, even if Michigan wasn't the best opponent available.

BYU needs to join the Big12.
They would make a good addition.
Plus another team to get us back to 12 teams and a Championship Game.

I'd take BYU and Cincy, BYU gives you a big name school, every mormon in america, and solid sports. Cincy gives you a way into the ohio recruiting, give those kids a choice besides Big ten football.

I've said this before, when they first were talking about going Independent: BYU will supplant ND eventually as the premiere Indy team.

They went indy because of the backing of the LDS church. They don't NEED conference revenue. They see their football team as an evangelism tool, and they have their own network to promote it. Like with the nation's catholics who grew up dreaming about playing for ND, the nation's Mormons dream of playing for the Cougars, attending their special college, and promoting their faith.

The number of catholics in the US is dwindling, while the LDS is one of the fastest growing religious groups in the world. They will eventually pass the Irish.
