Shakespeare In Love vs. Saving Private Ryan

Discuss...

Shakespeare in Love is mostly forgotten while Saving Private Ryan is still very highly regarded.

I knew a number of people who didn't go to see Saving Private Ryan because of the violence it had

Shakespeare in Love is a romantic comedy set in Shakespearean times with a young Shakespeare as one of the characters!

What's not to like? A perfect feel-good movie.

Two largely overrated films. SPR has an incredibly opening 15 minutes. The rest of the movie was pretty meh. SiL was a novel concept with some decent performances but nothing really remarkable.

Only females and queers would watch Shakespeare in Love.

Everybody wants to watch Saving Private Ryan.

I don't know why but it feels to me that this discussion will soon devolve into detailed descriptions of you fisting yourself with a fist full of big, black dildos?

One is arguably one of the greatest war movies of all time that, 20 years later still holds up.

The other is remembered because you got to see Gwyneth Paltrow's tits.

There is a small part of me that will hold always Shakespeare in Love in high regard but Saving Private Ryan is easily the better movie.

i wasn't a big fan of Saving private Ryan... But i am also not a fan of war movies...

But comparing the two because they won Best picture is silly...

there are not many great war movies... and it is hard to make a list of top 10 ever without it... thats why it will always be remembered.... Not because it was a great movie...

its just in a genre that doesn't develop great movies...

Even if it's only 15 minutes, those 15 minutes make it much better than SIL. That sequence is haunting.

BTW, the final battle defending the bridge is pretty good too. Nowhere near the Omaha beach sequence, but still pretty good. The bad part about SPR is that the story itself makes little sense and it drags for 1 hour after the opening sequence.

Honestly I only watched SiL once. It was a mostly harmless film that was sometimes charming and I like Gwen Paltrow as an actress, if not a person. SPR I have watched a few times but honestly SPR is way more in my personal wheel house. I watch lots of war movies over and over again. So while I prefer SPR that's more about personal preference than objective evaluation.

IMO, Spielberg used SPR to hone his war movie skill and enabled him to make maybe the best film ever made, Band of Brothers. Yes I know it is a mini series but it is still a film.

There are worse Oscar best pic flicks than SIL and better overlooked ones than SPR. I remember thinking SIL might be nomination-worthy when I walked out of the theater. SPR was good, but not great (aside from the first 15 minutes). I enjoyed both.

Absolutely. A light, romantic comedy revolving around Shakespeare. Considering that there were probably many people who didn't want to see a film like SPR with people getting blown up or images of soldiers with their guts hanging out Shakespeare in Love was a happy alternative.
