Ok, after going through my posts I think I just wasn't being as clear as I thought. I have no problem with the strategy the Padres used. I think my bigger concern is the type of players they got in return: a 1 and done, a divit in the outfield away from season/career ending injury, and an unproven hyped player.

You are 100% accurate that prospects fulfilling their potential is a crapshoot. I also agree that at some point the Padres had to say fuck it let's do something with this franchise, I just personally don't think this mix of players that were available was the right time. That's all.

Okay, I am 100% in agreement with what you just said. I love the go for it move, but I also think they bet on the wrong horses to do this with. A for effort, but C for their choices.

Not meaning this as sarcasm, but if they don't win it all this year what difference would next year be than the past decade for Padres? What guarantee would using those guys traded lead to anything different than the recent past?

Not harping at you, but hate the argument that making deals using prospects somehow mortgages the future. Nobody is guaranteed a future especially when it comes to unproven prospects. At some point you have to draw the line in the sand and say today is the day we go for it.

Bad analogy time: It is like a guy trying to decide if he should retire at 62 and possibly run out of money before he dies or work til 70 insuring he has enough money to live on but then dies at age 71 anyways. :hope:

A retirement analogy for the Mariners IMO is the guy who decides to puts a huge chunk of money into his retirement once a year and scrapes by the rest of the year instead of doing it monthly and still living comfortably.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that Seth Smith "is still a player the Mariners are considering."

Divish adds that "there have been offers made" for Smith, but the Padres "are still trying to figure out their next move." Smith is looking at a likely backup role with San Diego right now, but it's possible they'll opt to keep him around since they're so right-handed heavy. Also worth noting is that, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Padres gave Smith verbal assurance when he signed an extension that he would not be traded this offseason.

I was wondering when this rumor would start gaining traction. It seemed pretty obvious that Seth Smith would be a target for the Mariners once they decided to go with Ruggiano and the Padres decided to get an entirely new outfield.

Yup, now just get it done w/o trading everyone for him and then turn your attention to Zobrist. He would be the final offensive piece in my book if the price was doable, say Taylor and Medina. I would add Walker, Ramirez, and a prospect or two (not Peterson) if they added Archer.

Good move assuming it gets done. It would've been better if they added Melky Cabrera, but this was a next best option.

Maybe better if considering you should get nearly, or same, production from platoon at fraction of the cost.

2m2 minutes ago Seth Smith for Brandon Maurer deal is done, source says.

Would be happy with this given Maurer's ups and downs. I wouldn't be surprised if he regressed some, since it's bound to happen to some of our pen. Sell high on Maurer

Wow I am surprised it only took Maurer if that's case. Huge win IMO, plus he is under control at reasonable $$$ for 3 years. Maurer is a bullpen arm which are a dime a dozen.

Love the deal. I think this is the first time the M's sold a reliever for top dollar.

I am not surprised it only took Maurer. Everyone knew that Smiths value went down with every outfielder the Padres acquired. Just because he became expendable and the fact that he absolutely has to be platooned with a RH he ended up being a great fit for the way the Mariners built their roster. Maurer has a lot of upside as a relief pitcher which is always good to have. Good bullpen guys seem to grow on trees for the Mariners lately so I think this trade works out for both teams.

maurer will do well wherever he goes

it seems kind of impossible for smith to be a bigger piece of shit than we've had in the outfield for the past half decade

Nice call SF234!:suds:

Did I ever tell you the night I watched Maurer give up two home runs last year in the same game to Springer? Great night for my youngest sitting out in right field and Georgie boy tossed my kid two balls that night...

I like the move only because we had no choice. Can't believe we gave up Maurer though. I'll laugh if that comes back to haunt us.
