Any interest?

OPS+ of 124, playing mostly RF lately for the Mets.

I wouldn't mind, as he'd be a perfect complement to Blanco as a platoon mate. Do you think he'll make it to us?

He'll never make it to us, but if he somehow did, Sabean needs to find a way to get him. Dodgers would definitely block. Other teams with worse records would be interested, too, like the Pirates.

Yeah, that's the rub.....will AZ or the Dodgers claim to block.

AZ might not block because they're almost out of it and probably have no real interest in Hairston. I just read an article saying that its against GM etiquette to make a waiver claim if you have no real interest. It just riles up other GMs, causing them to make waiver claims in the future as retaliation.

So does that mean other GMs are mad at us for our waiver claim block to get Cody Ross?

No, the block's just part of the game if you're in a race and you want to prevent the team ahead of you from landing a guy. But if you're a team that's out of it, like the Rockies this year, then that would draw some ire.

I can see that. I guess AZ just now threw in the towel?

From mlbrumors:

4:41pm: Mets outfielder Scott Hairston has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports (all Twitter links). The Dodgers did not win the claim and neither did the Giants, Heyman writes.

From mlbrumors:

Well, this further reinforces the fact that there is absolutely no one of value we can pick up to play LF. Sabean already said a week or two ago that he's looking, but so far there's nothing compelling. Translation: The only thing available is crap.

or someone with a horrible contract, e.g. Soriano.

Soriano is just not available. The Cubs have begged him to allow a trade to the Giants to happen, but he won't budge. I bet the Cubs would even be willing to pay a huge chunk of his contract if they got some prospects back, but alas, Soriano hates us for some reason.

I don't think he hates us but rather he wont be scrutinized by knowledgable sports fans that demand a winning product if he stays with the cubbies. Also, by making sure he stays hitting in a bandbox like Wrigley, he is setting himself up for a short term high dollar payout when his current albatross of a contract expires.

This.

Could be what's wrong with Pence too. Anyone bothered to check out how Pence has done in his career when in pitcher's parks? SD, SF, LA mainly, or interleague in Seattle.

So if we can't even get a Hairston, we are well and truly fucked. I just don't see how we can win enough games without a LF. I guess the only way is if Zito and Timmy decide to have a good month.

Thanks, Sab. Rep.

So these numbers kind of imply to me that 1. Pittsburgh isn't a pitcher's park? and 2. Pence HAS hit in SF over an ok sample size, so it's not unreasonable to expect a pickup.

Also 2b. most of his PAs in SF have come lately and they haven't been good. So he must have really raked here before he was a Giant :(

I believe it edges slightly into the pitcher's park category.

mlbRumors:

Mets outfielder Scott Hairston believes the Diamondbacks claimed him off waivers, he tells Adam Rubin of ESPN New York (Twitter link). The Giants were known to be interested in outfield help and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports speculated earlier this month that the D'Backs would likely try to block Hairston or Juan Pierre from getting to their NL West rivals. Rosenthal also reported that the team that claimed Hairston did so as a blocking maneuver.

Whoa. That is some pretty flagrant pantshatting.

Show some remorse and you can cop a plea down to 2nd degree pantslaughter.
