Again, I reiterate - I don't know what's going on with Lynch's retirement - from either side.

I'd be interested to know what we offered him. Until we cut Marshawn Lynch, we're only at $5.5 million cap - so can't imagine that offer was big - or that it was highly back loaded with little guaranteed.

Uh, without Lynch (which is going to happen, Lynch will not be on the roster either way -retiring or cut) we're over $15M AFTER signing rookies and the current contracts we've given out. WTF are you talking about?

Just read if they cut him after the June 1 they split the cap hit of 5 million between 2016/2017.

Retiring and cutting are the exact same thing in the NFL. We eat $5M dead cap with Lynch gone but save $6.5M cap room.

Actually, there's a big difference. Seattle can spread the $5 million cap hit over this season and next if they cut him as a post June 1 cut. Doing this means that the dead money will be $2.5 million this year ($9 million saved against the cap) and $2.5 million next year. It pushes some of the cap hit for the dead money from this year (which is a tight salary cap year) to next year (which is at this point a very healthy cap year for us). Here's a break down from overthecap:

Explaining the June 1st Designation - Over the Cap

The estimated cost for the 9 picks the Seahawks have is 6 million, the last pick the Seahawks have makes a minimum of 464,000.

A few years ago they changed the rule that you could cut the player anytime but designate it a "post-June 1" cut to spread the cap hit. They don't actually have to wait until after June 1st to cut him.

There's another difference between releasing vs retiring: Lynch could go play for another team if the Hawks cut him and he decides to come out of "retirement."

Thanks Harold. Didn't realize the cost of rookies escalated that quickly :(

Don't forget most teams like to keep 4 million in the bank to replace players who get hurt.

I think it's more like 2 million, but with everything costing more :noidea:

Still lots of changes could happen to create cap space.....if that is what the Seahawks wish to do.

Donald Penn is visiting the Giants. He really wanted to retire a Raider, but guess they didn't want to spend what he wanted.

When the subject comes up at work or talking with fb fans in bars, everyone looks at me like I'm nuts, but I'm still calling that Lynch will play this year.

Maybe I'll end up wrong on that call, but so be it.
