to a 10 year deal for $69 million. Like I said, no confirmation, just a rumour that flashed across my screen.

Wow, if true that is cheap as hell for a 100 point player. I would be shocked.

that would be a good deal. I wonder what the bonus structure is like for any awards.

If this is true he should fire his agent immediately.

He probably wants to be locked up with Ovechkin. With the amount that OV makes, he would have to make a concession to get the salary to work.
Somewhat similar to the Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen and Hossa deals.

I would liken it to Crosby Malkin though. I figured he would want close to market value

Backstrom is a RFA, hank

does he have arbitration rights? if so, this is an even bigger steal for the Caps ... swedes tend to take less to stay in cities they have made their home

I checked with the guys I know who cover the team and work at Kettler and they have not heard of it. They also agree that he wants 10 years, but perhaps a bit more. That would be a great deal, especially 5-6 years from now.

you can't have bonus structures on contracts anymore, except for:
1) rookie deals
2) older (+35) players who have missed a significant portion of the previous season.

Thanks Puck, I didn't know they changed that.

i figured he would get around the 7 mil mark. he is a great player although without ovechkin his stats would not be as high so 7 mil a year seems about right.

so rfa's are free to sign with teams even while the current season is still in progress via the playoffs?
seems rather screwed up since it would logically exclude teams still in the hunt wouldnt it.

what? he is a rfa so he is allowed to sign with his own team. that is it. you can sign any of your own players at any time. another team is not allowed to offer him a contract until free agency. and the capitals can not trade him until the season is over.

Now that we've been in the cap era more than just a few years I think teams and players recognize the importance of cap management to maintain or improve the teams talent level from year to year. Not sure we will see very many 8 - 10 million cap hits in the near future.

Even if he was an Unrestricted Free Agent, the Caps own his rights until July 1, and they have every right to negotiate with him up until July 1. Other teams are not allowed to talk to him.
