The NLRB is heavily weighted with Liberal opinion.
This won't hold up at any level.
I thought this issue had already been put to bed.

The one interesting issue that will come to a head is that it will now allow players to start organizing in an attempt to try and get a piece of the huge financial pie of CFB. The ruling will penalize colleges that attempt to shut these attempts down. It has zero to do with liberal opinion. I somewhat see the players viewpoint on this. Though they get a huge benefit of a free education, room/board, university connections, they do bring a huge financial benefit to the universities. If the athletes at these private colleges work out some kind of a financial compensation package not available at public institutions, the CFB recruiting landscape will certainly be impacted. It will be interesting for sure.

So, I wonder if those schools could "fire" those players because of performance issues/
This will be going to the Court system.

Yep, this could open up the proverbial can of worms. And, if colleges get the ability to fire players, will the players then demand a contract like those in the NFL. It will be interesting to see how the NCAA responds to this.

An employment contract. Hmmmm.....
Or, some States allow an employer to "fire at will".

Don't kid yourself, numerous teams "fire" players. It is called processing for the non-contributors.

Many teams call them Medical Hardships or Transfers.

Yeah but those kids still get the free education, free food, free clothes, etc. All the benefits of the players on the team without playing. Not the same as being fired.

Could get very interesting in those "Right to work" states.

Thanks, Northwestern. :tsk:

I am OK with this. One big reason is insurance. Kid gets hurt playing for the school it would be nice to have it covered by the school

You could see this coming when the revenue started increasing exponentially and the subsequent skyrocketing in coaches and AD salaries ensued.

I can see some pandora's boxes being opened here for sure.

However, because the NCAA is such a self-righteous, hypocritical, back-stabbing organization, if it goes to court...

I hope they get their ass kicked!

Seems like this was covered when the Northwestern players tried to Unionize.

From the article:

What schools and athletic programs are affected by this opinion?

The NLRB does not have jurisdiction over public schools, so the ruling by NLRB general counsel Richard F. Griffin Jr. only affects football teams at private FBS schools. Those universities are Baylor, Boston College, Brigham Young, Duke, Miami, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Rice, Southern California, Southern Methodist, Stanford, Syracuse, Texas Christian, Tulane, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. The original case dealt with the Northwestern football team, so Griffin did not have jurisdiction beyond that sport.

This whole thing is just so confusing with weird ass rulings. All I've seen is judges have essentially said you can try to unionize without the threat of punishment if you try....but there is no ruling on whether they strike (the whole leverage of a union) if schools are allowed to revoke their scholarships.

It is completely stupid the law is stepping in for a few schools but not really stepping in, just saying if you go ask for X, Y and Z they can't punish you for it.
