Prior to buying the Browns in 1961, Modell had worked in television. NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle tapped Modell to oversee the league's broadcast committee, which basically made him the point person in negotiations with the TV networks.
In wasn't long after that the price tag for football started to go up. CBS made the first big NFL deal, buying the rights for just over $14 million a season. As the sport grew in popularity, so did the license fees, and it wasn't long before the league started selling to multiple networks, which drove the cost higher. The last deal Modell oversaw was the 1990 package for a then-record $3.6 billion.
94?And - when it was time for the new TV deals in 1994, Modell led the old guard charge in reupping with CBS and NBC. Jerry was the one who said "Wait a minute - let's see what the other guys might be willing to offer"... and Bowlen agreed. When it was all said and done, the TV package ended up being 20% more than Modell was going to settle for.

The last CBS telecast of an NFC game was the NFC Championship game between the Cowboys and 49ers in Dallas.
January 15, 1994.
we can only hope you're learning something here cause your mouth moves, but you seldom say shitThe way you wrote it I thought you were implying they negotiated the deal in 94'

Yeah pretty sure Kraft is not as well respected outside the Boston area as some Pats fans think. Jerry is the one owner that when he speaks the rest of the room listens. Every one of the relocations over the past couple of years had to have Jerry's seal of approval before moving forward. Other owners actually look to Jerry and he votes and usually don't cross him.

Correct
What has Kraft done to improve the league?
He did give a Super Bowl ring to Putin because he admired him so much, so that's good, right?
It's Ok that you dislike the guy, but be a man and admit it's because of his and his teams success.
Sucks knowing that the likelyhood of a lost to the Pats in Mexico is high this coming season.
of course it is. Raiders will have 32 penalties to the Patriots 2
Don't forget Jerry also provides his party bus to transport NFL executives to big games. That kind of sets himself apart.Hahaha ok keep believing that when it is about as far from the truth as can be about the tv deals. Bowlen and Jerry got the networks bidding against each other driving up the price to unheard of prices. Other owners were wanting to settle for the first deals they were offered but Jerry and Pat convinced them they could get a lot more.
I'm not saying that Kraft hasn't done some things but in comparison to Pat Bowlen or Jerry Jones he is still in the beginning stages of trying to catch up to them on impact of the game.
Funny you're comparing what Kraft single handidly did to what two owners accomplished. I'm good with that.Well let's see he and Jerry were the two that negotiated the deal to bring both Fox and NBC into the NFL broadcasting partnership. That deal alone doubled the TV revenue the NFL was experiencing. 5 years later he was the one that led the negotiations that brought the TV deals for the NFL to $18 billion. It was the largest sing-sport contract in history. He also was the one that pushed the NFL to go overseas and expand beyond the U.S. boarders having his team be the one to head to China, England, and Mexico. Now the NFL is seeing a huge surge in fans in those places. He also was the one that brought the NFL Sunday Night Football.
You talk about Kraft stepping in to help secure the CBA this past time. WEll the time before that guess who was the one who was the head of the committee to get the CBA done...Pat Bowlen. Guess what he did it without the threat of having to stop games.
Pat Bowlen was on the committees that brought in the biggest money growth in the NFL in TV Revenue, labor peace, international play, and stadium construction. Pat Bowlen was the go to owner when the other owners and NFLPA couldn't agree on something. He was the voice for a very long time that could speak to both sides and was highly respected by both sides. The past NFL Commissioner has said as much.
What do you mean? Jerry has been owner and coach for the majority of his ownership. Then again his numbers as a coach may keep him out.I'm still not a fan of owners getting into the Hall of Fame, how Jerry Jones got in still baffles me. To me it's for the guys who strap them on and the coaches who sleep in their offices. But if Jones is in then obviously Kraft should be as well.
