My point was about giving up Mookie Betts and that giving up Mookie Betts was ridiculous ESPECIALLY if it was simply to get Price's contract off the books. Which they only sorta did.

You're wrong. The Red Sox offered Mookie a 10 year $300M contract and he refused. He said he'd take a 12 year $420M contract. $35M a year and he needs more than a few days off every year.

The Dodgers got Price and the RS paid half of his remaining salary.

Mookie was gone after this year and the Sox may not have gotten much for him and Price but Mookie had no intention of resigning with the Red Sox. The Red Sox got under the Luxury Tax and will spend the money next year after the Tax is re-adjusted. Price has been a pain in the ass to the team and to media for the past two years. The Red Sox did him very well and he's never been appreciative of anything.

Wasted money in 2020 by the Red Sox

Red Sox will spend $50,409,418 in CASH for players that will not or are highly unlikely to bat or throw a pitch in Boston this year

David Price - $16,000,000
Rusney Castillo - $14,271,428
Dustin Pedroia - $13,125,000
Pablo Sandoval - $5,000,000
Manny Ramirez - $2,013,418
Manny Ramirez? Couldn't they void that one by inviting him to training camp then arranging for him to have a "random" drug test?

Yeah, DD didn't dig the hole. He just dug it deeper.

Anyone could do was DD does, get open check book, sign best available, FLA, DET, BOS, at least FLA made him sell those contracts before he left.

Most likely never will. He's only been up with the Red Sox a few months right @navamind

Yeah, he's only had 337 MLB plate appearances and 289 of those came in 2015. He hit .262/.301/.379 as a major leaguer though his defense looked promising. He's been kept in the minors because of a tax loophole. Despite that, he still lives in Boston and commutes to Pawtucket for home games. It's a pretty lousy situation even if he is getting paid, I would like to see him get another shot in the major leagues.

Yeah, but at this point he could opt out of his contract if he wanted to so not playing in the majors is on him. Not that I blame him though. It wouldn't make sense to give up 11 million bucks or whatever just to have a chance to make the major leagues at the minimum salary.

LOL

If I said it about Mookie, that would be sarcasm. Him I won't miss even a little bit.

David Price was good eatin' !
The Twinkies' Gatorade Kid is holding up the transfer of $60 million (allowing an additional $10 million for luxury tax penalties) off of the Red Sox payroll.

LOL. Somewhere, Joe Rudi and Rollie Fingers are sharing a chuckle.

Dodgers take on the risk with Graterol (#83 prospect on MLB.com, Red Sox now get 2B/SS prospect Jeter Downs (#44 on MLB.com) and catching prospect Connor Wong. The Twins will also be getting a low level minor leaguer in addition to Maeda and $10M.

I'm more excited for this return. Downs could slate in as the Red Sox 2nd baseman of the future, though there could be some contact issues (.267 BA in minors, 25/55 hit grade on Fangraphs). He's probably the Red Sox #1 prospect right now. Wong was pretty expendable given the Dodgers' catching depth, but he has good offensive numbers. There are some concerns with defense and plate discipline, but he could be useful in a unique utility role (one that can catch and also play 2nd/3rd).

MLB.com's scouting report on Downs:

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

As if the Dodgers don't already have an abundance of shortstop riches with Corey Seager and Gavin Lux, Downs batted .276/.362/.526 with 24 homers and 24 steals and reached Double-A shortly after turning 21 in his first season in the organization. A Reds supplemental first-round pick who signed for $1,822,500 in 2017, he came to Los Angeles in December 2018 as part of a package for Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood and Kyle Farmer. Named after Derek Jeter, he's the younger brother of Jerry Downs, a first baseman in the Red Sox system.

Downs actually struggled at the outset of 2019 when he got too impatient at the plate, then took off once he settled down and started working counts and using the entire field. Just one of his 19 homers in his first two pro seasons went to the right side of the field, but he showed the ability to drive the ball the other way with six opposite-field blasts last year. With his simple right-handed swing, quick hands and deceptive strength, he should hit for power and average.

Downs is a smart and aggressive runner who makes the most of his average speed. After spending more time at second base in 2018, he saw most of his action at shortstop last season. He has the hands and enough arm to play shortstop, though his range fits better at second base.

only one of those is DD’s fault. And even that is only partially.

plus rusney doesn’t count against the tax anyway

MLB.com's scouting report on Downs:
I have to say that based on the stats those minor leaguers look good. Especially Downs. You don't see that kind of power in a middle infielder when he's only 20-21 years old that often.

Rusney's doesn't? Thought it did. Also wasn't blaming DD but Red Sox ownership

Nope, he was the last of a "loophole" (aka common sense rule) that if you got designated and went unclaimed (under a certain amount of service time) that your salary came off the tax. They closed that loophole because of Rusney.

But that's why he wont see the light of day in Boston. Because if he comes back up, that contract goes back on the books towards the tax.
