Forget about the upcoming season for a second and pretend you are getting a fresh start at each program. How would you rank the Big 12 jobs?
My ranking:
1) Texas - National brand, elite facilities, great recruiting in the area (Texas and the Gulf States)
2) Oklahoma - Very similar reasoning to Texas, might even have a better national brand in 2020. But you don't have the same home base for recruiting.
3) West Virginia - This one might surprise people but I really like the WV job. They are the biggest sports team in the state and they have a good fanbase. WV doesn't produce a lot of talent but they are very close to PA/MD/VA who produce a lot of talent. With the right coach, you can get 25 good kids each year to commit to WV.
4) Oklahoma State - They have great facilities and a good fanbase. However, what makes this job tougher than WV is their recruiting. When Oklahoma State goes down to Texas, they have to recruit against Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and others.
5) TCU - TCU has largely succeeded in their jump from the MWC to the Big 12. They have a smaller fanbase than the big public schools in Texas but they are in an area of the country with a lot of great recruits and TCU has built their brand up.
6) Baylor - The Bears have built up their reputation over the years. Briles was a great coach (on the field, not talking about his off the field problems) and Matt Rhule was so good that he was off to the NFL after a few years. They've had a lot of success with those guys. However, I don't think the Baylor job is as easy as those coaches made it look. It's still a small private school that has had their fair share of scandals recently.
7) Texas Tech - On one hand they are a public school in the state of Texas. On the other hand, Lubbock is not the easiest place to recruit to. They have had problems finding sustained success since Mike Leach was let go.
8) Kansas State - They have a good fanbase that supports K-State football. It's just difficult to find 25 kids every year to go to Kansas State that will put them in the upper half of the Big 12. But Bill Snyder found a way and Klineman has done a good job as well.
9) Iowa State - Very similar job to Kansas State except they never had their Bill Snyder. Right now Matt Campbell is having a lot of success at Iowa State but that hasn't significantly impacted their recruiting. Their recruiting remains in the bottom 1/3 in the Big 12. This is a tough place to bring in talent.
10) Kansas - Saying Kansas has struggled this last decade would be a nice way of putting it. They have consistently been terrible and fan support is almost non-existent. It's also not an easy place to bring in talent.
