Rangers and Adrian Beltre have had extension talks, and it's promising enough that they'll continue into season - tweet from Jon Heyman

That's completely opposite of what has already been reported.

Every part of my heart wants him to retire a ranger, and I think he wants it too, but he also knows this is his last chance for one last pay day for his family and knows the rangers have frankly had him on the cheap. I hope he wins a WS with us this year, and then I'm good with whatever happens. I just cant justify giving him 3+ years at 20+ per.
Maybe in 2019 the team he is on will be out of the race and we can pick him up as a bench player. It wouldn't be the same as him being here continuously, but it would be nice if we needed his bat off of the bench and he was available for a decent price.

Very possible, but there's some variables that will play into that including our position in the race, and how well guys like Rua and Gallo are doing. Mitch could bring back a nice piece or two, but if the team is really clicking are we really thinking JD is going to interrupt that?

Time will tell, of course... You never know what the Rangers might need or what other teams might need. I suppose I should dial down the certainty, I just can't imagine Mitch reaching FA with nothing to show for it.

I think that almost entirely depends on how Rua is doing. If he is already performing well enough that he is forcing his way into the lineup more than they plan then they could very well be tempted to trade Mitch and put Rua over at 1B full time. If we do trade him or a bullpen piece I hope it is for some upper level pitching prospects to provide some organizational depth. Maybe a pitching prospect that is a rung or two higher in potential than Martinez and Chi Chi.

We'd offer him a QO which he'd turn down.

They would probably value the draft pick he would net us if we make the QO and I am sure we would.

2/10 won't get it done. 2/18 with a third year option might be more realistic.

I haven't seen a 2 year extension mentioned. The last I heard was 3 years.

I checked back and it looks like I read wrong. 3 years is still too much with what we have and want is coming up. Maybe at a lower rate with incentives and an option. You hate to this put a bad taste in everybody's mouth. But this is surely a business for the players at times

Yeah I know 2 for 10 is extremely doubtful but with what Fielder and Choo are getting paid and the supposed budget restraints and then deciding what they are wiling to offer Darvish, Im not sure they could even offer more than that. Kinda my point, is I seriously think he may be elsewhere next season

If this is a Beltre or Darvish question the answer is obvious. Imo, once he returns and shows he can pitch at an elite level, he has to be our #1 priority going forward.

What if they signed Beltre to a 2 year extension for $19 million per year and the other shoe to fall would be trading Choo in the offseason? They would have to eat a portion of Choo's contract for sure, but they might get it to work financially if both things were done.

I'm not sure I'd risk offering Mitch a QO.
If he is hurt a lot again this year then I agree. If he hits 20 something HRs then I think it would be safe.

I think Mitch will have a really nice year this season and that won't be an issue.

I'm not looking to dump Choo.

HaHa. I know what you mean, but for some reason when I read that I hearkened back to the middle of last year when you and I and everyone else was calling for him to be launched to the sun. lol

Obviously his poor play was the outlier, which I'd said all along, but I was wondering how much longer he'd be so bad, and frankly had no idea why. Thank God his wife flipped the switch for him before we dumped him for peanuts and ended up paying him a chunk of change to play well for another team. I think he has a season much closer to or maybe even a bit better than his norm.

I just think 19 is too much for an aging AB, I am glad he earned every penny of the 16 per that he was signed for originally by the Rangers, but at this stage I wouldnt be willing to offer much more than 15-16 per annually. I know he probably walks if that happens but funds would be better allocated IMO. Again I love the guy, but I think its just a move the Rangers have to make for the betterment of the club eventually. If he really wants to stay, he offers a discount but he appears to want to play hardball(no pun) to an extent, and I just think the leverage is on the Rangers side w all the young guys needing a spot soon
