Packers will host Seahawks in intriguing season opener
    • [IMG]
      Rob DemovskyESPN Staff Writer
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packerswill open the season at Lambeau Field for the first time since 2012, and it’s a marquee matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, sources told ESPN.

The Packers-Seahawks game will not be in prime time, but it could be one of the national afternoon games given that it’s a meeting of two of the expected favorites in the NFC.

The full schedule will be announced at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday.

The opener holds intrigue from the standpoint that Eddie Lacy won’t have to wait long to face his former team. The Seahawks signed the former Packers running back in free agency earlier this year. The Packers beat the Seahawks 38-10 at Lambeau Field last season in Week 14 as part of their six-game winning streak to end the regular season.

The two teams are meeting as part of the two games determined based on last season’s finish. Each team won its respective division. The Packers went 10-6 and won the NFC North, while the Seahawks went 10-5-1 to win the NFC West.

Last year, the Packers opened in the sweltering heat of Jacksonville, where the temperature at kickoff was 90 degrees. The Packers hung on for a 27-23 victory in what was tied for the third hottest game in franchise history. They didn’t play their home opener last season until Week 3 and then had their bye, meaning they had only one home game in the first month of the season.

In 2015, the Packers opened at Chicago. Before that, their openers were at Seattle in 2014 and at San Francisco in 2013. The last time they opened the regular season at home was against the 49ers in 2012, when they lost 30-22.

All the Packers’ opponents were set immediately after the season. They can be found here.

Most fly into Appleton [ATW]. Flying into Milwaukee would likely be cheaper, but will also add about 2 hours to your drive beyond the drive from Appleton.

Also note that I-41 and I-43 can get locked up tight on game days. If you can find a place to stay in the Green Bay area Saturday night, I'd recommend that. If you plan on driving in on game day, give yourself a lot of extra time. If you happen to have smooth sailing in, no worries... the pre game parties outside the stadium will be bouncing for several hours before the game.

Was considering going to Cleveland game, was hoping it would be earlier so it would be nicer. Curse you NFL. Guess I'll freeze my ass off.

    1. Finally opening at home!
    2. Love the midseason bye
    3. We better be humming once the season starts...vs Seattle and @ ATL has to be the toughest start to a season.

Could've been worse, though. Could've followed that up @DAL, TB, @PIT. I don't mind starting the season with two of the tougher games on the schedule. We might actually have Clay and Perry together on the field before they both inevitably get hurt again.

Yikes, very tough start. Not really happy to start the season with GB, much prefer some easier opponent to kick off the season and rather start at home. However it is what it is.

This is the first time in four or five years that we get to open at home. However this is two straight years we go on the road for someone to open a stadium.

Pretty bad timing for that game. Lots of new faces on D that will still be learning the system.

Or it could be good timing for that game, since they get it out of the way early and get the bad guys overconfident prior to a playoff game.

Hopefully some of the 2nd year guys (Lowry, Clark, Brice, Fackrell, Martinez) will be settled in and allow those young corners to match up with Atlanta's receivers.
