Wasn't she written as searching for something to do (the whole going upstairs bit) having her post baby depression, then starts to recover (going on job interviews etc) and then they get in the accident? My memory could be faulty on that.
As for their 'chemistry,' that was definitely on purpose. They did an AWESOME job of portraying the awkward detente between unfaithful parents who stay together for the kids.
Dunno if you've seen through to the end yet, but their 'chemistry' starts to look like it could rebound as the first season ends up.
Who knows where they're taking that though.
