I still don't think Cardinals fans are over the blown call at first base in the '85 World Series. Jorge Orta called safe by Don Denkinger I believe.

That is up there with Cuzzi calling Mauer's double in the playoffs last year foul when it landed a foot in fair territory. Disgusting call. MLB umps are worse than NHL refs, and that's not disputable.

I never though MLB needed instant replay, but damn it entered my mind tonight. Could they put in a special "perfect game" clause?

There is no precedent for calls of this nature to be overturned. Absolutely tragic. I'd like to say that it will be overturned and he will be awarded a perfect game. But, this is Major League Baseball and I just don't see it happening. Too much pride and historical integrity on the line. Even if it is the clusterfuck of clusterfuck calls, as this really is, I don't think it will change anything.

Pathetic. I don't care how much the players like him, or how many years he has on the job Joyce should never be allowed on a Major league diamond ever again.

While we're on the subject of horribly blown calls...

For what it's worth, supposedly the Ump made a statement acknowledging he blew the call and cost the kid his perfect game.

As I said in the Orioles topic a few weeks ago, if I saw that kid walking down the street I would punch him in the face. I recall he was drafted some time ago, but don't think it panned out. Think he might be in the front office for some team these days. Still, punch in the face totally called for.

Joyce acknowledged that he blew it...I kind of feel bad for him.....it's probably safe to say that nobody feels as bad about what happened as he does....what are you gonna do?...

I wonder if he saw the sno-cone catch of the ball and assumed that the ball was being bobbled...only thing that can possibly explain that call.

i'm not that big of a baseball fan.. actually i pretty much hate it.. but if the pitchers keep it up they're going to ruin the spectacle of a perfect game.. 2 in 3(?) days and 3 in a month.. gettin kinda commonplace aint it?

regardless.. awful call

I don't think that's the case. The ump simply said that he thought the runner beat the throw when he called him safe and acknowledged that he blew the call and cost him his perfect game. But since he realized he made the wrong call then perhaps he should have used that excuse that he thought it was being bobbled. That way they might score it an error instead of a hit so he would at least get a no-hitter.

Still thinking about this.....if there is any doubt at all in that situation you call him out. Even if you blow it, it goes away quicker than this will.

Agreed. No way the umpire should call him safe there with a PERFECT GAME on the line. That's a bad call in any regular baseball game, but 8 2/3s into a perfect game? Absolutely historically brutal.

It really wasn't even that close. Tie goes to the runner (excluding perfect game bids with 2 outs in the 9th) but that wasn't even a tie. He was a good half step from the bag.

Armando Galarraga was just fucked out of a perfect game by an awful call at first base. The runner was out by half a step and he was called safe. That umpire should have his fucking nuts cut off and be fired. It was the final out of the game.

Needless to say this would have been the 3rd perfect game in less than a month in MLB. Unbelievable.

That's a little severe isn't it? LOL. From what I'm hearing, the umpire went right into the clubhouse when he saw the replay after the game and admitted he blew the call. He even hugged the kid. He feels really bad about it, but what can you do, it's done with. At least he manned up. I guess everyone, even the players, have considered this umpire one of the best in the game.
