I spoke with retired University of Oregon professor Sherwin Simmons Saturday night. He's the man who became the target of students engaged in a snowball fight on campus. He's baffled at the idea that video of the incident has gone viral.


Simmons told me he was on his way to the museum of art Friday to donate some pieces. He'd taught Art History since 1971 but retired last year and no longer needed the artwork that had long been displayed in his office, since he no longer has an office.

As he drove toward the museum, Simmons said he had no idea UO football players had invited other students to take part in a snowball challenge, which he thought was rather funny and innocent. Simmons said he was never scared as students stood in front of his car, and started dumping snow on his windshield, but he did stop driving because he couldn't see and didn't want to hurt anyone. He describes the sound of snowballs like someone banging fists against his vehicle.

I wondered why he got out of his car?

"I wanted to ask them, 'Why are you are doing this?'" explained Simmons.

He said students began cursing at him as he got out of the car. He felt a mob mentality and calls it a "stupid, dangerous thing, anti-evolutionary behavior."

When he confronted the students, Simmons said it was difficult to find anyone who was actually involved. And it was difficult to identify anyone who had thrown snow at him or at his vehicle. The girl he spoke with told him she hadn't been participating.

Once Simmons eventually got the museum, he said he mentioned to security they should contact campus police because the snowball-fight situation seemed rather heightened. As he left, a campus officer asked Simmons if he wanted to press charges. Simmons says he told the officer that wouldn't be necessary.

"It was a snowball fight," said Simmons. "The students shouldn't involve people who aren't part of it, but this is not high crimes, not an assault, not even a misdemeanor. No one should be charged. That would be nuts."

Simmons continued: "It's not anything I wouldn't have done at Yale when I was a student there, only we would have thrown snowballs at each other. Not at a white haired professor like me! I am 68 years old, after all."

Video of that was shown on the local nightly news up here. They said the students were throwing snow balls at vehicles, pouring snow and water over them, and were creating a near mob-like situation when people would get out of their vehicle to ask them to stop. They said it was several vehicles involved.

Just thought you'd like to know that this was covered in full detail on the main Seattle nightly news.

Nah, not assault. And even the professor was cool about it. But one would think the University and at the very least his coach would want a word with the young man in question...:target:

His name is public knowledge, so he probably doesn't want retribution. It's still a crime Huff committed willingly and seems to have no remorse for. Any DA worth a damn would arrest him.

I would sit Huff in a bowl game, at least a half or quarter.

It sucks that he is a SR, but hey, dick moe.... What you going to do?

You dont do that to a persons vehicle under any circumstance, especially when they are behind the wheel.

And then to dump snow on a man you see is a SR citizen... Just wrong on all fronts.
