We trade for a week during winter meetings, Dec 7-12, in my keeper league (98 total players will be kept with 4 year contracts). I have #1 overall pick which would be Harper. Been offered Arenado, Dickerson, Hosmer and my #1 for Carlos Gomez, Nola, A. Escobar and his 3rd round. I was thinking of counter: sub Schwarber for Hosmer and his 1st round instead of 3rd round. Is this enough for Harper?

All input is appreciated. Need to respond within a couple of days.

I most be reading this wrong because it sounds to me like you are getting screwed in this trade. Tell me if I got this right.

Arenado, Dickerson, Hosmer and 1st round

for

Gomez, Nola, A Escobar and 3rd round.

My counter would be I get
Arenado, Dickerson, Schwarber and # 8 overall.

I give up
Gomez, Nola, A Escobar and #1 overall (Harper).

Got you I was reading that wrong.

So in my mind you get
a late first rounder, a mid rounder and someone who is going to be over reached for, along with the 8th pick. With 98 players being kept I am guessing 14 teams keeping 7 a piece. So depending on your roster Dickerson is probably a throw away.

You give up an early second rounder, a ss that is still a few years away, and a ss that should not be kept. and Harper.

So basically I am looking at Arenado, Schwarber, and the 8th pick for
Harper and Carlos Gomez. Plus saddling one of your opponents with a minor leaguer who is going to burn a roster spot this year and maybe next.

I like it.

I don't think anyone likes Arenado more than I.... but I still can't do it. Dickerson has upside for sure, but his health is worrisome and Harper is only scratching the surface.

Just checking in to let you know I suck at dynasty type baseball. Just don't have the devotion to know the minors system. I'd be pretty much useless in this one, sorry Fuzz

I'm big on Arenado and Schwarber. I agree with TKO that Dickerson's health is an issue, and Harper may yet become the All World player that he thinks he already is, but in a dynasty or keeper, I do it. Having Arenado at that corner spot is huge, and if Schwarber ends up at catcher that's also huge. You will be set at those positions for a long time.

So yeah, I like it.

i am on the fence here. I feel like you are buying high on shwarber. I guess as long as he has catcher eligibility he will have a lot of value. But when you can only keep a player for 4 years i look more at the immediate potential. I think that you might be giving up q little too much.

It is close though so if you are really that high on shwarber then do it. But i just don't think I am high on any unproven. Especially when you can only own him for 4 seasons.

That's a fair point. You are deciding between Schwarber's quick development on the field and the development of Harper's maturity, really.

Dickerson is as good as Gomez.
The rest seems like a solid deal to me.
I'd do it

He rejected the counter as he really likes Schwarber. I still like the basic deal so I just re-countered. Arenado, Dickerson, Hosmer and his 1st round (#8 overall) for C Gomez, Nola, A Escobar and my #1 overall.
I would keep the two Colorado OFs and would have to consider Hosmer based on how weak my team is.
What do you experts think?

Could you list the top ten non keeper eligible players? It might sway me to see who you can get at 8, but I'm pretty strongly in the corner of going with Harper for the next four years.

The more I think about it, the more I think you may be right. Could be my personal distaste for the guy is clouding my point of view. Also the fact that Arenado is probably my favorite player in baseball.

Yes. I love the guy too. Had no hesitation to take him 15th overall last year.

Any way you can get Arenado alone, Fuzzy?

Early reports are that Heyward is signing with the Cubs. Although the point here is now moot, seems to me that Schwarber should be catching.

Can't get Arenado without giving up my #1 pick which would be Harper. I will get an answer within the next day or two.

@TKOSpikes
My options at 8 would not be that great:
top ten non keepers IMO
B Harper
A Jones
F Freeman
C Kimbrel
A Cobb
E Gattis
B Revere
F Liriano
S Miller
B Gardner

and we keep for 5 years total

It's so close. Wouldn't blame you for doing it, but I'm a hair on the Harper side.
