did a little research: took the top 358 offensive players. using 2014 Projected stats

253 of the 358 had there BA .25=<X<.3

259 of the 358 had there OBP .3<=x<.35

90 are less than 2.5 BA

52 are less than .3 OBP

of the 47 players with OBP .35 or better only 8 players would not have been drafted in the first 12 rounds anyway... 3 of those 8 are catchers, so in a 1 catcher league those 3 would not be drafted...

What this shows to me, is that there are much less players that can hurt your OBP than there are that can hurt your BA... The problem with that is that there is less of a deterent to draft someone... and if there is minimum deterent then there will be limited reasons to

If you're a catcher. You should be a swinger. Your chatter should never be in a bitching tone. What's fair is fair. El Pudgito,(Ivan Rodriguez) the greatest catcher of our generation, knew this. If you're a selective as a backstop as a hitter you won't last long. Cuz you aren't doing your pitcher any favors. Buster Posey, Brian McCann and Mauer are exceptions since their clubs invested money in them to provide offense. Which may or may not be foolish.

I guess I'd put it this way. . If we're assigning point values. .A hit, imho, would be worth 1..A Walk, 0.75.

My points league, that's it... except a walk is .5 -- and that's why points leagues rule the universe! Everything is accounted for in points leagues. Hits, walks, strikeouts, quality starts... etc. Should be the norm, IMO.

No. You are just setting your OBP standard too low. .300 is more in line with a .220-.230 BA and is really quite poor. Without running the numbers, I would equate an OBP of .375 + with a .300 BA

I like OBP better. Nothing drives me up the wall in a weekly roto and BA comes down to that last AB on sunday night and the batter walks. With BA it is like your guy never even got to bat. EX tonight Yusiel Puig is 0 for 1 with 3 walks. in a BA league you are charged an AB and that is it even though he got on base three times.

While typing this Puig just struckout.

Yeah...I'm still getting used to OBP, but this pretty much nails it, imo.

I agree with this, but at the same time the complexity and balance required in a category league can't be accomplished in a points league.

:agree:

In a points league, you draft as many power hitters as you can and don't worry with players like Villar. Base stealers don't get you the points in most league's, so who cares if you punt that category.

I don't think "balance" makes or breaks any leagues. There's nothing in the rules of a points league that you can't have a balanced team. I think the "balance" of a category league is way over hyped when it's H2H. An actual rotisserrie league where stats are accumulated over the season makes sense, I just don't see the fun in those leagues. H2H begs for points, IMO.

So u would draft Dunn over Ellsbury U look for players good in all stats matt carpenter was 8th in points last year he hit 11 homers and stole 3 bags but he had a 392 obp:suds:

Not exactly. In points leagues you draft the guy who will get you the most points. It makes no difference how he gets them. If all of your players have similar skill sets, that is perfectly fine. To win in category leagues you need a more elaborate plan.

A team of Ellsbury, Carpenter and Prado type hitters is not going to play so well in roto unless you have a sick pitching staff.

I would agree with this post if the rest of the categories in fantasy were advanced statistics... RBIs and runs are based on teams played, HRs is affected by stadium played... Fantasy statistics are actually not about talent, it is about actual production... So any talk about advanced statistics proving anything means nothing to me when it comes to fantasy numbers...

The problem with OBP is not comparing power hitters to power hitters but power hitters to non power hitters... in 5 categories power already gives the advantage in HRs,RBIs and Runs, why give another category for power to give an advantage??? shouldnt there be at least one category that a specific type of player does not get an advantage?? Yes, there are many non power hitters that draw walks, but generally speaking power draws walks more than any other player...

The problem with OBP is that you are more willing to use players despite there weakness as a player...

Not sure if i made sense or not, but if i didnt then i can explain better if needed...

Getting on base is production.

Im in two ESPN leagues and a steal gets you 10 points. I believe that's the standard scoring they set up for that category. I have Hamilton and EY Jr in one league to take advantage of that.

Lets be realistic. I was saying someone like Villar shouldn't be touched in points leagues. Whereas I took him in Roto leagues to get the SB.

What are the rest of the points? That seems a lot for steals

2000 points is an excellent week in that scoring system. 16-1700 usually gets you a win. Unless you're me and you lose with 1850. Ugh. You're down in the keeper league this week hevo.
