Expanding while Florida and Phoenix still exist is so incredibly stupid. Which means they will probably do it.

Are phoenix and florida making money for the league?.....If so they are staying. But I would think Seattle could do better than both. Vegas is a severe challenge

For national TV contracts Phoenix and South Florida bring more to the league than Seattle. Doesn't matter to the league what the local draw is

As far as Seattle is concerned, step one is they need a new arena. However, I don't think there is any appetite to build a new arena until they secure a NBA team.

How do they bring more? They're bigger cities but likely care 100x less about hockey than Seattle would, at the very least. NBC would pay more nationally if they were getting higher ratings, which a team in Seattle would probably bring when their games are national.

For national contracts the networks want national "coverage" for the leagues. Not saying it makes the greatest sense but that's how it is

Wouldn't they just get the local market ratings for national broadcasts and compare? I'm not even going to claim to have any idea what local ratings are for NBC broadcasts in the three mentioned markets, but I probably wouldn't be far off by suggesting that non-NHL market Seattle has ratings at the very least comparable with NHL markets Phoenix or Miami as is.

For one Florida and Arizona are actually good markets for hockey TV (just not the local teams) due to a large number of northern transplants. Second part of the "pitch" is that there are teams all over the country and in all major TV market. seattle is an OK market but doesn't fill a big enough gap to make the NHL want to let a team re-lo there from a major TV market. I think they would be fine with giving them an expansion team though

NBC's current contract with the NHL runs until 2021 ... i cant imagine what kind of say they would have on future franchise locations ... unless there is some proviso that losing a Miami or Phoenix market or not gaining a Las Vegas tv market re-opens the contract :noidea:

the dream massive US national tv contract windfall has been promised for over 20 years ... meanwhile the Panthers are averaging 9000 viewers per local broadcast :L

can we let this go yet lmao

at this point ... the NHL just wants to go where theres someone who will pay a massive expansion franchise fee

You negate your own argument with this. If it's a good market for national TV regardless of having local teams why not put the teams in markets where the national footprint is primed for growth? Also, how doesn't Seattle as a NHL market "fill a big enough gap"? The Pacific Northwest isn't a a big enough gap? There's over 12 million people in the region (without even including some spillover into British Columbia) and Washington is the 8th fastest-growing state in the country. All of this is even without mentioning once that Seattle is the 15th largest MSA in the US and is the 4th fastest growing of the top 15 after Houston, Dallas and DC. No part of your argument is logical.

Keep in mind that if they announce a franchise this year, it likely won't start play until 2016 or 2017. By then, you're within 4 years of negotiating a new TV deal. Time flies :(

Regardless, you're not wrong. This is all about expansion fee and I still can't see a person from Seattle fronting that much money for a hockey team + arena unless it's a Microsoft guy.

Vegas, no way. They couldn't even support the ECHL Wranglers with 2000-2500 @ $22 per game. Does anyone really think 7000/8000 fans paying $60 a seat, per game, is going to happen?
Comp tickets to tourist, be real. Casinos want players in their house, not sitting in some arena for 3 hours.

I actually think market size of teams will be such a non issue at that point with the way the television industry is going ... at this stage live sport broadcasting is what is saving cable tv as we know it

and that far (its far when you consider how fast technology is changing) in the future there will probably be even more methods of broadcast delivery fighting for live sports streaming/broadcasting rights

You also have to factor in that at least a couple thousand Floridians a night die while flipping channels and sometimes it lands on the Panthers game.

thats even more complicating when they get shot in the eyeball

Exactly. I can tell you as a fact Rogers' purchase of the NHL rights has so much to do with data streaming and so much less to do with cable. They know the industry as it is is finished, they wanted to be ahead of the curve when it comes to streaming and that's why we're still seeing Mark Messier interrupting date night with a god damn iPad. They convinced themselves that's where the money's going to come from, especially in urban environments where cord-cutting is becoming more and more of the norm.
