Red Sox players said this was no big deal . It's everyone trying to make something out of nothing. Do we all honestly think EVERY pitcher doesn't try to get an edge. Even in the interviews they admitted they try to get an edge however possible. This is a non issue. The only reason it's getting any attention is it's a Yankee and it happened during a Yankees-Red Sox game.

Isn't part of the rule if Farrell brings it up to the Umps that means his pitchers would get checked also?

Only the pitcher he questions will get checked, but usually the opposing manager will have the other teams pitcher checked as well in retaliation. It's one of those "unwritten" rules on baseball.

The guys on MLB Net discussing this all agreed that it was clearly pine tar on Pineda's hand. They also said that, since nobody from Boston complained about it during the game, there was no reason for the umpires to do anything about it, and that Pineda pretty much had to lie by claiming that the substance was dirt. Finally, Harold Reynold claimed that years ago, Pineda wouldn't have gotten away with it, since the opposition would have done something about it, but today guys just don't care if the opposition cheats. Thought that was pretty interesting.

Shouldn't matter if a team complains or not though. Umpires see a violation and they should call said person out for it.

But oh well, Sox wouldn't have gotten the W even with out the "dirt" he was dealing last night.

Gotta give props to the Sox. They didn't make any excuses about it at all. They knew he was pitching well and it wasn't their night. Moved on and ready for next one.

Yeah a lot of guys definitely do this but man was Pineda blatant and what a ridiculous lie with dirt.

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner called manager Lou Piniella during a game to get him to have the umpires check the opposing pitcher for scuffing the baseball. "But George," Piniella said, "our guy is cheating, too!"

True story.

It was part of the broadcast last night. However, I swore the Yankee manager mentioned was Buck Showalter

He said it was dirt. LOL... Not even close to Dirt... Just like Clay wasn't either

Of course Clay wasn't cheating. We all need to make sure we wear sunscreen when pitching indoors at night :suds:

I know a lot of people like the "tradition" of most of these unwritten rules but MLB should really distance itself from that and just put them down on paper. I understand why pine tar is used to grip a ball on a cold night and recognize how ubiquitous it is in the game but one day a pitcher is going to be dealing in the playoffs, the opposing team is going to complain, and the other team is going to have a solid gripe.

They should just put it in the rule back and be done with it forever.

The Yankees cheating or their "Tradition" being a joke is hardly news...but the photos are hilarious. He wasn't exactly hiding it all that well! Teams are afraid to call him out because they probably worry their guy will be next.

If the league isn't going to enforce it, then take the rules on doctoring the ball out of the rule book.

Let pitchers do whatever they want to the ball.

I started this thread and it's fun to talk trash about the Yanks and all.

But I agree with what you said here. If MLB isn't going to enforce the rules, then I don't blame players for ignoring them.

The Red Sox do it too, that is why they didn't make a big deal out of it.

The thing I don't understand is why say that it is dirt?

That looks nothing like dirt. He would have been better off saying he had the runs after eating some good old Mexican food, and they were out of toilet paper and he was forced to go biblical and use his hand.

Just my perspective.
