Tate will never be open now, though. I do think the lions pass offense will survive but the pass offense was the only thing they did really well

Tate had his best production while Calvin was sidelined both this year and last

He will "un-retire"
and join a team that doesn't suck.

He's under contract with the Lions so the Lions would have to trade him or cut him for that to happen.

Only wish that were the criteria. Were that the case, then Terrell Davis, Steve Atwater, Randy Gradishar, and, perhaps, Rod Smith would all be HOF.
Unfortunately, they weren't good enough to make it on their accomplishments.

yeah.. i don't think Calvin Johnson did anything last year that can't be replaced.. the guy has been injured non stop for the last 3 years. He wasn't himself anymore. he wasn't even a top 10 WR anymore...
Injury prone, downside of his career, if he only attened Rutgers BB would be all over him.

Tate can get open on his own. His most productive days are when CJ isn't on the field. And even when they do play together, Tate often gets the throw because he was the proper read, as opposed to CJ who gets the throw simply because he's CJ.

Damn. Can't say I remember the Barry Sanders situation, but I can't help but compare the two...

Sad to see someone as great as he was go out so suddenly without hardware.
That's the first thing I thought of too. Lions have written another chapter in the book of NFL for wasting huge players.

Greatness can't be denied. Looks like he's sick of the game. Interesting that he joins Barry Sanders as notable early retirees from DET. Guess it gets old waiting around for the occasional playoff appearance.

The 1st part of that is a given...agree 100%.

On the 2nd part in bold...show me the 11 better...I think still top 10....since his peak yr in '12 he's caught 84, 71, 88 the last 3 yrs with all of them being over 1k in yds...that's still WR1 type production in my book...this guy can still play, but mentally he's probably wondering why bother putting up with the aches and pains for another 7-9 to 9-7 type season.

The Sanders situation and this situation are not even remotely close.

Sanders wanted to continue playing. He wanted to be traded. When they didn't, he pulled a Carson Palmer and retired. The only difference is, the Bengals gave in and got a few decent picks out of the Raiders. The Lions never relented. If he was playing, he was playing for them and them only.

Johnson is banged up and isn't what he was. I think the second part of that is a factor, but I think the first part of that is the big thing. He's looking down the road in 5-10-15 years, and doesn't want to be using a walker to get around. He's made his money, and secured his future. Too many more injuries and he's not going to be around long enough to enjoy that future, at least from a physical sense.

CJ: 149 targets, 88 Catches, 13.8 yards a catch, 65 1st downs, 9 TDs

Tate: 128 targets, 90 Catches, 9.0 yards a catch, 50 1st downs, 6 TDs.

I think most would argue that this past year was Megatron slowing down a bit but for 21 more targets, Megatron got 50% more yards than Tate, 15 more 1st downs and 3 more TDs.

Tate is a good #2 WR. Nothing more.

I wasn't arguing that Tate is better than CJ even at this point. Just that Stafford developed a very poor habit of forcing him the ball and now Stafford may actually become more efficient.

Last year Stafford had 71% completion to everyone not named Megatron, and 59% to CJ himself. And I wouldn't just attribute that to CJ slowing down, his career average is 56.5%. Although a great player, he's been a crutch to Lions QBs and coaches his entire career, and IMO part of the lack of growth because of it.
