I'd rather they didn't and get the compensatory pick. Bell has maybe 2 years left of elite level play. I'd be shocked if he was able to play into his 30's given the mileage he has on those legs. Let some other team overpay & become their ball & chain.

My understanding is that its essentially a Franchise Tag, but without the exclusive rights. Like SP said, the tradeoff is the cheaper price tag but it allows Bell to shop the market. My biggest question is, if someone wants to offer a contract, does it have to exceed that $17.4mil in order for it to qualify as a contending offer? I would assume so, because anything less or equal to that tag means the Steelers meet the tag rules.
