Why did we just make the best special teams in the NFL worse?
Well, yes. But $4M for a backup to a backup TE is on the expensive side. Trey Burton is as good a player at a fraction of the price. I am guessing that they asked Casey to stay at the Vet minimum and he opted to walk.
It's okay to overpay some guys if you don't need the money. You can't have a team, or any sustainable successful organization, with all underpaid guys.
We had the best special teams in the league with both Burton and Casey. Let's keep the best unit on the team intact. Without the special teams we'd have been drafting top 10.
Can't say I disagree. James Casey led the Eagles in Special Teams snaps and they were the best in the business.
Still, he earned three times the paycheck of the other Special Teams specialists (Braman & Maragos). His contract was signed prior to drafting Ertz. The Eagles did a good job of keeping him and honoring his contract paying him $8M for two years of relatively light work. Maybe at the end of the day Casey will come back for a market value contract.
There are rumors Cary Williams is next but team sources say that hasn't happened.
I think you are on to something. You may have nailed it on the head. The smart play is to sign Maxwell or another FA, draft a CB early and keep Williams. Let the rookie push Williams for the starting job, and then let Williams walk after the season is over and the rookie has proved himself.

It's a weird way to look at the offseason by first cutting a whole bunch of stuff that you don't have to. What is this a video game?
If he comes back on a more appropriate deal, then obviously they played it correctly. (And that's what I just did in a mock offseason I participate in each year. I actually saved 5 million by cutting and re-signing both Celek and Casey.)
Casey will go out and test his worth. He'll either get a deal or come back cheaper, you can always find a good ST'er at half that.
It would be stupid to let Cary walk. He's a douche but he's good enough to start and really good if LB and S are addressed.
They sure seemed to stay away from him and abuse Fletcher. If that's all he was really good at wouldn't they have spread it around more? The only things he's "really good" at is holding, illegal contact and PI.
