Long road leads WVU’s Dillon to NFL Draft doorstep

Dana haters gonna hate.

They love to talk about Dana's morale's... hard drinking reputation...

But, there is this...

The day before National Signing Day in 2012, Dillon learned from a hospital bed that he had Type 1 diabetes.

“I was stressing, my mom was stressing, the whole family was stressing,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Oh, man, I’m not going to be able to play football. West Virginia might take my scholarship. I’m not going to be able to go to college. I’ll probably just be a regular guy and get a job.’ ”

Dillon had Proffitt call WVU coach Dana Holgorsen, who had visited Dillon at his home with assistant coach Joe DeForest a month before.

“Here’s what’s going on, but before you send that fax down here for him to sign, I want you to think about and understand what you’re getting into,” Proffitt said.

“I don’t care if he doesn’t play a single down for us,” Holgorsen replied. “We want him here at West Virginia.”

Now... it is done.

Dillon goes in the 5th round to the Houston Texans.

Dana gave him an awesome opportunity... Joe DeForest coached him up... and WVU has 2 safeties drafted for the first time in like ever...

WVU had the most NFL draft picks (5) since the 1999 draft when it had six players drafted. All six of the players were taken in the first 4 rounds.

The distinguished list includes...

#33 selected Charles Fisher - CB - 2nd round
#52 - John Thornton - DT - 2nd round
#33 - Solomon Page - G - 2nd round
#75 - Gary Stills - LB - 3rd round
#95 - Amos Zeroue - RB - 3rd round
#121 - Kevin Landolt - DT - 4th round

The '98 team went 8-4 and beat one team with a winning record... 8-4 SU... a team that finished #25.

In fact, from '96-'98... HC Don Nehlen went 1-10 against year end ranked teams with 10 kids who ended up drafted as we add to the '99 draft class the following players...

#27 - Anthony Becht - TE - 1st round
#47 - Jerry Porter - WR - 2nd round
#50 - Barrett Green - LB - 2nd round
#168 - Marc Bulger - QB - 6th round.

Our HC ended up in the HOF. He... like Dana... actually played teams with a pulse... unlike Billy Stewart or Rich Rodriguez.

Reality bites...
