Honestly still trying to figure out why you would cut him in the first place if you just planned to re-sign him a couple of days later. This makes much more sense if they wait until after week 1 because then his contract is not fully guaranteed for the year. Otherwise just restructure his deal with him while he is still on the team instead of risking losing him.

By cutting Forsett, the Ravens were able to carry defensive lineman Carl Davis and safety Matt Elam on their initial 53-man roster. Both Davis and Elam were then put on injured reserve Monday, making them eligible for the one "designated to return" label in the middle of the season (if a player is placed on IR prior to being on the 53-man roster he becomes ineligible for the return designation).
They were afraid the other backs would be claimed on waivers
