i dunno...id rather have a guy who k's 100 or less, hits around .300, and gets more hits vs a free swinger like edmonds was.

So you'd rather have Denard Span than Mike Trout in 2014?

After all, Span hit .302, struck out more than 120x less than Trout, and had more hits...that fits your exact criteria mentioned above.

trout is arguably the best young player in the game, not just CFer.

edmonds was 30 in 2000, and 35 in 2005

the time frame you chose.

why would you compare that?

But you just said you'd rather have the guy who hits .300, strikes out less, and gets more hits. Now you're backtracking with a bunch of caveats?

I still haven't seen any reasonable argument on anyone being better overall as CFer than Edmonds from 2000-2005.

Part of the reason he needed all those steals was because he added very little value in other things offensively, such as power and getting on base.

I mean, if he were to be a better hitter but as a trade-off stole less bases and stole say 500 bases, was he any worse of a player?

But there are aspects of being a player... He was one of the All time Best at base running... He may have only had a 6 year span of being one of the best, but how is that any different than Sandy Koufax and other short span Greatness...

I know there is a huge difference between Koufax and coleman... But the point is still valid...

im not the one comparing a 30 year old edmonds to a 23 year old trout lol

im also not backtracking...im watching you squirm thru this exercise.

edmonds was a nice player fior a few years, but as folks agree near universally on here

NOT a HOFer

and id take bernie williams over edmonds still

Koufax during his prime was a great all around pitcher...it's not as if he excelled in one aspect of the game (ie - K's) but was mediocre in everything else as Coleman was. And the one thing Coleman excelled in was one of the least important/valuable parts of offense, considering doing more valuable things (such as getting extra base hits) would eliminate the need for steals.

Why does age matter? So if Trout were 30 then the comparison is valid? I'm looking at strictly performance, regardless of age...what's so difficult to see about that? I could you Jose Batista vs Melky Cabrera to show the same concept, which is that your criteria makes no sense.

And you claiming you'd take Bernie over Edmonds for those 6 years is just as ridiculous as you thinking Ortiz is more of a HOFer than Piazza (which nobody will agree with you on here).

But base running was the only thing Coleman was good at, and base running is less valuable than defense and much less valuable than hitting.

maybe its just me...but id rather have a guy who hits around .300, doesnt strike out a ton, takes a lot of walks, and scores runs vs a guy who fans 150 times and makes the occasional sportscenter highlight catch.

being a really nice player for 4-5 years doesnt make you a HOFer

for their careers, id take williams over edmonds...and that span, even at the end of bernies career...id take him.

i watched both play

2000-2005:

williams:

920 hits
124 HR
515 RBI
441 walks
480 K's *
.289 avg

edmonds

851 hits
210 HR
590 RBI
551 walks
853 K's *
.292 avg

ummm

one guy was 30

one is 23?

also, how is someone"more of a HOFer" than another guy?

you mean first ballot?

i'll take that bet that ortiz is "more of a HOFer" than piazza if thats the criteria!

So did I....I'm a Yankee fan and Bernie's my all-time favorite player.

If we were to post those numbers along with their OPS figures but not showing names as a poll, who'd you think will get more votes as the better player? Bernie or Edmonds?

Lol, Edmonds and Williams had nearly identical career OBPs. And Edmonds' had a career SLG% 50 points higher. Edmonds averaged 10 more home runs per season than Williams. Edmonds' defense was overrated, but Williams was a below average defender (especially at the end of his career, you were better off with a mannequin out there).

We're talking about the 6 year stretch where you'd rather have Bernie. When did this turn into career numbers? Come on...
what an odd poll that would be.

"who was the better player for a few years?"

387 more hits

517 fewer K's

58 more RBI

115 more runs

12 more doubles

OPS+ 125 (a whopping 132 for edmonds)

Bernie Williams had one fewer year, but he had over 1,000 more plate appearances. Which makes comparing counting numbers even stupider.

2,336 hits. I guess we better get Johnny Damon into the HOF!!!

And I have never said that he should make it for anything else... I have said that he should make it solely because of his baserunning...

Base running is one of the major aspects of baseball and should be treated that way... Vince Coleman had a 6 season run that might have been the best 6 seasons all time in baserunning...

Being the best at any major aspect of the game should make the HOF...
