there's no way, shape or form Crosby was asked to join this team.
Hockey Canada made it very clear that Olympians wouldn't be asked to play in this tournament.
Perry made headlines when he approached the team unsolicited and offered to play.

It will be inexcusable. Most likely will mean new coach for Team Russia and significant overhaul of roster.

Now, if Team Canada loses - there will be no shortage of excuses. WC doesn't matter. We sent our B-team. We are not used to European rinks. Blah-blah-blah.

And when it comes to that, just try to remember that Russia won last year WC with a B-team on NHL-sized rinks.

Im guessing what happened is either Messier asked and then went to the media to say Crosby declined because Messier likes to see his name in papers

or

a reporter asked if Crosby was going to the Worlds and he told the reporter no and it magically became "Crosby declines invite"
