Used to love that Tigers team, one of the teams I would simulate when playing stickball

Darrel Evans
Lance Parrish
Whitaker and Trammell
Was it Jeff Leonard? Chet Lemon?
larry Herndon?

man I still remember that team

Them, the Brewers, Astros and Cards

Used to love to use those teams back than

Kirk Gibson

He don't wanna walk you video!!!

What about them?

Claiming at a .330 AVG, 1.109 OPS, 42 HR season is 'borderline' great is a major understatement....it's arguably the best offensive season since Bonds' 2004.

As we approach the winter of "500 million for Bryce Harper"

So I have the #4 pick in my big money draft, so I started to look at Goldy/Arenado/Betts/Harper

Correct me if im wrong here

Has Bryce Harper lived up to the hype a grand total of ONE season his entire career, and been otherwise nothing more than "pretty good" ?

Im starting to think this is the most overhyped player (so far) ever
Harper was certainly hyped more than any prospect in a very long time. SI cover at 16 was just ridiculous.

But would I say his hype to results ratio is the largest discrepancy ever? Not close. It was always unlikely he was going to reach the point of greatest player of all time. So if you're comparing him to that standard, then sure he hasn't reached that and never will.

As for his contract, he'll be going into his age 26 season, that's the biggest reason he's likely to get a huge deal

based on what, OPS?

and yes, arguably...its what we're doing right now.

didnt crack 200 hits
didnt crack 100 RBI
didnt crack 40 doubles
didnt win a batting title
didnt use his speed, at all...swiped 6 bags (21 the next year)

yeah, i was being hyperbolic with "Biggest ever", you know me, its what I do

I just listen to the $400-$500 million speculation, and Im measuring the player he has been so far against that, and say hmmmmm

Exactly, if all that matter is OPS and OPS+, sure I guess he is one of the greatest ever

All arbitrary numbers to signify greatness?

If a guy hits .250, 40 HR, 100 RBI, 40 doubles, .340 OBP, is his season better than Harper's?

Harper led the league in , HR, runs, OBP, SLG, WAR, and was 2nd in avg and walks. How is that not a great season?

Harper hit 42 HR and 38 doubles...if he had 40 HR and 40 doubles, is his season somehow better because he got to 40 doubles??

we get lost in over analysation and deep metrics.

yes, OPS and OPS+are valuable, but so are standard baseball metrics like hits, RBI, etc

he hit .226 "late and close" in 2015.

.256 with 2 outs and RISP

24 Years old.

.285/.386/.515/.902/140 OPS+

I wish the Indians had some players that were overhyped like that.

What is the % of MLB players that broke into the bigs at 24 as opposed to having 6 years experience?

no, because its like 80 pts less in BA, 1 more RBI and 2 more doubles. thats just silly talk.

List of NL players who cracked 200 hits that year: Dee Gordon. Whoopie.

I wonder why he didn't get 100 RBI (only got 99, which was 5th in the NL), could it have been because he was 20th in the league in plate appearances with runners in scoring position and every player with more RBI than him had more PA with RISP?

Yeah he should have hit 2 fewer HRs and hit doubles instead, then he would have 40 HRs and 40 doubles. I guess leading the NL in slugging percentage didn't matter.

Didn't need to use his speed

#1 in HR
#1 in runs
#1 in OBP
#1 in SLG
#2 in AVG
#2 in walks
#5 in RBI
#1 in WAR

Those were his 2015 season league rankings....how is that not a great season?

Were talking about one season and whether or not that was a great season. Calling it "borderline great" is ridiculous.

Pretty much...if he had those 2 less HRs be doubles (so he'd have 40 HR), and if he had 5 less runs scored but had 1 more RBI (so he'd have 100), would his season really be better?

If Harper had 2 less HRs but 2 more doubles (so he'd have 40 doubles), and 10 less runs scored but 1 more RBI (so he'd have 100 RBI), is his season somehow better because of those milestones?

no, you left out the lack of base stealing, not coming close to 200 hits, having 130+ k's...and the .227 late and close BA didnt help either.
