I have ran a new ethernet line from my router to a small home office (3 computers), the ethernet cable is connected to a switch (netgear 8 port model fs108).

All computers connected to the switch identify and connect to the network and report an internet connection. However, I cannot open a web page in my browser. If let alone long enough, I get the "ie cannot open web page". When I click the diagnose connection button, it reports that it cannot find a problem.

When the ethernet cable from the router is connected directly to one computer (bypassing the switch), the internet works great.

WTF?

It's definitely a problem with the router........

Fucking routers pain me to a point which I cannot explain. Most of the time I can fix the issue by restarting the router

Also, there is a button on most routers called a "WPS button"........it's basically the only button that is plain obvious to see on the router. Push it and it will attempt to find any device within the reachable radius that can receive a wireless signal......and it will attempt to connect.

It's not the router.

As I said in the OP, direct lines from the router work fine. Along with the wireless.

It's after the switch where the problem lies.

I'm not using wireless. I'm in a fireproof safe room, that can't pick up the wireless. Hence the ethernet cable & switch.

The model netgear you have, has no routing capabilities. It is only a switch with no routing features.

Problem solved.

Could you explain that a little more? I don't really understand.

... and if a switch won't work to "split" the ethernet, what do I need?

There's your problem. You need to setup a tunnel to get through the firewall.

A switch is meant to join several computers together in a network......not to an internet connection

Basically, if you have multiple computers connected to the switch, you can share data amongst the computers connected.....

But you can't share an internet connection.

Router -> Switch -> computers should work...sounds like a router problem, though...are you connecting the Switch to a port labeled "uplink" or something similar? Or just a regular port.

Not really sure, I just read that the model you have fs108 has no routing fetures...

Try this.

Another test to try:

Diconnect the router from the switch
Find the cable that connects into the switch from your computer
Remove that cable from the switch and plug it directly into the router
Test internet connection from your computer. You should get interent access, but no one else will. If you can now connect to the internet, that would suggest that the switch is at fault.
Repeat from 2 onwards at a different computer to double check.
