That makes a bad statement about Baptists. Falwell isn’t exactly a model I would want my kids following.

I understand. He's not a guy I would choose to emulate in all matters, either. We're all mixtures; we have good traits, we have less desirable traits. There are some Baptists who are great people, and some who are jerks.

I do know a couple kids who went to Liberty, back when Jerry was still alive. They had nothing but good things to say about who he was as a school president. He was highly involved in things, he took time to know students by name...but he also succeeded in creating a very insular environment. I'm not one who believes Christians should isolate themselves from the rest of the world or live in a sub-culture.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great hire from a football stand point. It's just a bad look for a supposed Christian university.

I hear this, too.

On the one hand, Christians are supposed to shun the appearance of evil and live above reproach, but that often makes them come off as judgmental and unforgiving.

When they show forgiveness and acceptance, it makes them come off as hypocrites with no standards.

Liberty~ Liberty~ Liberty~

Liberty ~

My kids and I, the first time we heard this "jingle..." we died laughing. We imagined that the marketing wizards who created it were sitting around going, "Liberty, Liberty, Liberty...huh, there's till time left. Screw it, let's add one more Liberty"

It’s a “do you like the Old Testament or New Testaments” debate.

Wow...

Not exactly the splashiest hire, but they could become a dangerous team to face in the coming years.

The Catholics have Notre Dame, the Mormons have BYU, the Baptists have Liberty
Wow! Not sure if you realized that you just trashed your own team.

psssssst: Baylor is Baptist

Kinda, but they're not considered a "national" school for SBC kids. I mean, there are plenty of Baptist-affiliated colleges all over the country, just like there are other Catholic/Jesuit schools besides Notre Dame. But when you think of THEE school for Baptists, it's Liberty

Liberty has over 45,000 undergrads. Imagine that every hard-core Southern Baptist kid in the US, who happens to be good at football, decides he wants to play in Lynchburg instead of going to a secular school?
Hmmm, this could get interesting. From what I understand, there are a lot of small Southern Baptist churches scattered throughout the rural areas of the deep South and attended by a large portion of the African American population. And we all know those black mommas pull a lot of sway. I could see some of those infulential mommas "insisting" their good little football playing son attend that nice SBC university instead of that sinful and secular state university...much to the chagrin of the kid.

Good lord. They’ve had that option with Baylor for decades.

I don't either. Doing so is the beginning of a road that too often leads into Jim Jones/David Koresh territory. JMO

It’s a “do you like the Old Testament or New Testaments” debate.

Yeah, most people are familiar enough with certain elements of christianity, like the broader narratives of the OT and NT, and they over-focus on one at a time.

Non-believers exploit this, to use whatever is convenient or expedient from either narrative, to try and shut the believers up in a given, particular argument.

Christians, for their part, are flawed individuals who sometimes make it very easy for non-believers to criticize them, by focusing too much on one of these broader narratives themselves.
