Retire #11, Major Applewhite, why not?

He was only one half away from being in a national championship... Mariota was one half from winning one.

:L Mariota won the schools first heisman trophy and what he did for the community is even greater than what he did on the field.

I'm not sure about retiring his number, yes, great player, maybe one of the greatest Ducks ever, but still, leaving a year early. You sure about thanking him for leaving early?

He had to leave early. It was time. He had nothing left to prove. It's what's best for him. Oregon fans should feel fortunate to have him as long as they did and I'm sure they do. Stud athlete and class act. I wish him well at the next level.

He could come back and try to win a national championship sure, but really what would that have done in terms of raising his draft stock? What if he got injured in the process? The kid went 36-5. He was a winner. It's his time to declare. He made the right decision.

Yeah, if a player, especially a qb, is considered a first round pick (especially high in the first round) the smart move is to leave early. If they don't, then the NFL starts questioning him and spending the next season picking his game apart.

Matt Leinart actually had better stats his senior year than he did his junior year when he won the Heisman and dropped from the probable #1 overall pick had he come out after his junior year to the #10 pick.
