It has to be pretty damn bad to announce it now. He could have said something to them behind the scenes and waited until after the wild card game tomorrow. Not having him available in that game is not an issue considering he's s starter and with the way they've been playing they're probably going to lose anyway.

On the flip side, if he had waited to publicly announce it after the team lost a wildcard game, people would have given him and the yankees shit for doing it after he had nothing to lose.

Well he could've just thought it would've been better to do it now rather than wait and risk being in a tempting situation to drink/party if the Yankees win the WC game and any further series.
