If he is, it's a bad hire then.
Maybe. Maybe he also wants someone with experience to come in and mentor his future DC. This makes me think he could be looking at Marcus Freeman. With Bill Davis out, Freeman would fit in seamlessly as LB coach this year. To get to learn for a year from Mattison would be huge for his growth. Mattison is an excellent recruiter and is obviously well-respected.

Sorry Harbs...took two of your coaches. They like Ohio St more and they actually want to win for a change lolzzz
One so far. The Washington stuff is still in the "OSU showed interest in" category.

Kind of odd hire especially after OSU rolled up 62 on UM and then Florida rolled up 41. Plus he's getting up there in age.
We still don't know what he will be oficially. I think Washington will be coming along with him, at least that's what I have been hearing. The Buckeyes defense still has a few spots to fill in the defense still. I'll kick back and just see how things shake out.

They've both showed mutual interest. Obviously Washington's Columbus ties help.

Michigan's defense got worse every single year with Mattison in the DC position....I liked him as our line coach. Great experience for a guy in that position. But I wouldn't want him as our DC again.

Now breaking that 49ers DB Coach Jeff Hafley will be joining the staff as co-DC.

Washington would be the actual blow. As I said, when Mattison was kept on it was kind of expected that he'd just stay on until his contract expired and then retire (this year). So losing him is more like a huh? moment. Losing Washington would be bad. A young guy we got on staff, is one of our best recruiters, being conditioned for a spot on staff, given LB's last year and then to lose all that to OSU would be bad.

Sounds like he'll be co-DC, which is fine. He has a lot more talent on this team than he did when he was DC at michigan. He's going to be a big help for recruiting.

At this point, he'd be taking a lateral move, as only LBs coach remains open. However, he'd be in great shape to take over at DC once Mattison retires, which could be in a year.

Not sure I like this one from a DC standpoint. Mattison is a great coach, but hiring a guy just south of 70 years old seems a bit odd for a young HC.

There is a train of thought that it's not a bad idea for a fairly young first time head coach to have a couple older veteran coaches on the staff to help them along as they learn to be a head coach. Everybody wants young recruiters but you also need an experienced stabilizing force that has been down these roads a time or two to help keep things straight.

So just so I'm keeping up. OSU lost two staff positions, LB and Schiano. And has now filled both spots; right? So that means they'd have to lose another to get Washington? Or is there a third I'm unaware of.

He was DC from 2011-2014. When he came in, you guys had picked up like eight 4* defensive players in the previous 3 recruiting classes. That's one recruiting class for OSU. He was pretty pivotal in ramping up recruiting efforts, and it showed by the time Harbaugh came in, but he was working with junk for the most part.

Hafley will likely be the DBs coach, replacing the (assuming) soon-to-be gone Taver Johnson. LB coach is still vacant.
