i get it. Great fit, but do they have the money for it?

dyson makes sense too.
I am not interested in Cain AT ALL. But I am not convinced about Dyson either. Is he enough of a step up from Gorkys to bother with this move?

Giants might actually be competitive this year.

Either one would be an upgrade but I like Cain for his power and speed and I think he's two years younger than Dyson. I don't think the Giants will pony up for either though.

But he also might require a contract 2-3 years shorter...

Dyson would be a stop-gap who could be had for 1 or 2 years.

Cain will likely require a 5 year deal but is already on his steep decline. AND he would cost a 2 and 5. No thanks.

Do you guys think you are building for a 5-year dynasty? You get a player and hope you win next year. Why in helll do you give a flying fuck about 2-or 3-year contracts on guys who are 3 years younger? Seriously? You go from the W.S. to the worst team in the NL In one year and you are negotiating over whether a CF is a 3-year deal or not. It's fucking funny.

Giants last won the WS in 2014.

Signing Cain would cast draft picks. That directly affects a rebuild.

How is that hard to understand?

In The mlb draft a 2 and a 5 aren’t really that much.

They are to a depleted farm system. The cupboard is nearly bare.
You are playing this as a situation where you need a farm system. You don't need a damned farm system. You need one guy every other year to join the team. You trade for players, you sign guys. It's not like the damned Fresno Beefsteaks are all going to join the team next year and all the guys there now are going to be whisked off the table into the sea.

Oh, well it's a rebuild? Trading for 2 MLB players would suggest to me that they are trying to compete. What the about a rebuild did I miss? You keep talking about the value of a 3-year contract. Seriously, are you playing this game on a Stratomatic board? You try to win a pennant and after that, you take your chances. This bullshit about contract values and player control is really a lot of cloud work.

The 2nd pick in the round makes them stronger.

If there was a FA worth a shit, I would be OK with punting the picks. But none of the FAs this year are any good.

Martinez is leveraging 1 season into a huge multi-year contract, and he doesn’t play defense.

Cain is already diminishing, and will only have MAYBE 1 more year of productivity, but will require something like a 4/80 to acquire.

Giants don’t need Moose, Hosmer, Yu or Arrieta.

Obviously, Machado or Harper would be no-brainer signings, even with the pick-punts. None of these guys are Machado or Harper, even in their wildest tales dreams.

If you don’t have a farm, how do make a trade?

If all you do is sign FAs, you will NEVER compete. You have to have a core of cheap players that get augmented by FAs. Sure, there are exceptions.

And I am good with the direction the Giants are taking for 2018 as a last-gasp try for one more shot during this window. But that does not mean you put on the blinders and sign guys for 3 years more than they are worth just to increase your chances for one year by 1%. That just puts your org into a death spiral that you can never get out of.

This is his second stint with the Giants. I can only guess that the FO has taken it a direct challenge to pronounce it correctly...
The Giants got Austin Jackson too. That's a good signing. Pretty decent defender and a solid veteran to fill out the outfield. So far, so good this off season.
