Don't forget, Germany buttered up the Portuguese defense a little it for us. We could advance after all.

Beasley and Jones did a great job on the left (defensively anyway). Most of the attacking came down that side, and they were forced to low % balls in. I thought Ghana made a huge mistake by not attacking our right. Two offensive minded guys over there. Their only goal came off of our right. CR7 will test our right, big time Sunday. Perhaps we move Jones over to the right. We shut him down we got a shot. And I think they proved today that they are not a top 5 team. Shut Ronaldo down, shut Portugal down.

That was just too intense. Dempsey's quick goal was a thing of beauty and we looked pretty good up until Altidore's injury. After that, everything else attacking wise was complete shit. We had potential opportunities but gave a lot of it away with sloppy passes and bad touches. But the defense was freaking excellent. I was stunned we held off Ghana as long as we did and had accepted that a tie would be fantastic. But then John Fucking Brooks!!! FUCK YEAH MURICA!

Very true. Those sloppy passes at the top of the box on offense were killing me.

Beasley and Jones along with Howard are the stars of this game. Great defense. It seemed like every time we got hold of the ball we kicked it out of bounds or to Ghana. Ghana's players were way too quick for our guys. We had to back off because we couldn't stay with them if we attempted to mark them. They, on the other hand, had no trouble marking us.

Actually Germany and Portugal will not be so quick so our possession time should go up.

That was one hell of a goal coming when it did at the end. Really exciting game to watch if you cheer for the USA.

WTH was with all the cramps/hamstring issues?

In the current format, teams that win their opening game have an 80% chance of moving on after group play. :suds:

Still got a big task ahead with Portugal, but still, USA really helped themselves big time.

Oh man just got home from the bar and my voice is gone.

We played like dick for 80 min of that game, but were able to put in 2 of our 4 legitament chances.

I think John Brooks made me cry a little bit.

That is very common in the south for football injuries too. For whatever reason that I'm not scientifically privy to humidity it is a hamstring killer.

Getting down to business, I am not a big Jermaine Jones fan, but he played outstanding tonight. Beckerman as well. Bradley needs to step it up - as he didn't look very good.

Hopefully Jozy is ok. Our inability to hold the ball up top really showed.

Crazy thing I heard last night. Lalas last night on world cup tonight said he think we have a better chance of beating Portugal than ghana.

Thoughts?

Losing Altidore is a major blow for our offense. No doubt.

But,

Portugal will be down 3 players during our game:

Fabio Coentrao and Hugo Almeida will be out due to game injuries today. Portugal team doctors says they will be out at least 10 days.

But the real blow to their team was the idiotic red card that their best defender, Pepe, pulled today. Some are calling it the dumbest thing they've ever seen in the sport of soccer.

I don't really understand why he needed to headbutt the guy.

Guys think about this. If we beat Portugal it is almost a lock that we would secure a place in the round of 16 unless Ghana beats Germany. This group could be done by sunday night if Germany and USA win
