I'd like to think that everything was above board as FZ implies .... but I just don'T know. From the little I see in writing it's not clear ...
For months they persued Chapman, his replacement and they didn't give him any heads-up what was happening. I also read that he only found out about the signing through social media. Also think taking him to arbitration for 350,000 was rather petty ... then I see where FZ says the organization is very open and easy to talk to. Even mentions that the manager was part of that openness. Maybe Melvin is. Not sure Kaplan was though. Just don't think this looks good to people outside the org
FZ may feel it is all above board, and he had the right to release Davis. The issue is who owes him the 6.9 million. The rules regarding a release in this scenario is that the releasing team can only pay a pro rated amount in a non guaranteed deal if the player is not performing up to big league levels. Nothing in Davis’ 2023 season or this spring training indicates that. So his camp could press to have the Giants pay his full 2024 salary and whoever signs him pay the minimum. That could give him more options to start for some other team

Yep I agree. And I think he will and if not take league minimum but close to it as long as he is a starter.

Giants might have kept him for that amount.
I'm not even sure that is a possible scenario. Davis won a 6.something M arbitration suit against SD in February ...

The Twins are putting DeSclafani on the IL with a forearm strain. Looks like he wouldn’t have been of help had the Giants retained him.

Even if he were healthy, he wouldn’t have been any help. Dude was a disaster from the word ”go”.

Jist for another perspective ... being one of the oldest members of this forum I may be the only one here to ever see Sandy Koufax pitch. He wss one of the dominant lefties to ever take the mound. But it wasn't always that way. Early in his career he was very wold and all over the place. I think he actially took the mound at the age of 18 or close to that. Was very average for about 4 or 5 years then he seemed to find himself. Absolutely hated when we faced him back in those days. Like I said one of the most dominant pitchers that I remember as a kid
I saw him while growing up in LA, those were exciting teams

No.

He was a solid #2 in 21. You wouldn't take 170 innings of 3.17 ball? Granted, he fell off after and was injured but that 21 season was brilliant.

Fair. But he has been absolute garbage since, AND injury prone. So he sucked, but at least wasn’t available much to hurt the team with his play.

Interesting fact…

The Pirates OTHER catcher, Henry Davis, was the #1 overall in the ‘21 draft.
