I personally don't remember Lou (not old enough) but I know enough that his teams in the late 80's and early 90's were all championship caliber teams. More specifically, the 89 and 93 team got screwed out of National Championships. 94 to 96 were good years................kind of like last years ND team. Good but not great. Guys that know better that me can tell you about Lou's glory years.

His three worst seasons were his first, his last and the year after the 1993 season. The rest they were in the mix pretty much every year he was there. From 1988-1991 they were pretty dominant. They backslid a bit in 1992, and 1993 they exceeded expectations somewhat, and were it not for the BC game, very likely could have been Lou's second NC.

I don't really fault them for not getting the NC in 1989. Can't lose to Miami in that fashion, no matter how great the rest of the season went.

1991 the OB was a screwjob, but it also seemed like the year the press pre-ordained CO to be the NC's. Kinda like FSU in 1993 was pre-ordained.

Hello all...I share all of your feelings...I am like 50/50 on this, but I am also pissed off about the game...SO. Yes BK has brought this team back and made them fun to watch, and relevant...but since the NCG we have been stuck. IDK why...BK needs a swift kick to the junk to wake up!! Here is what I have been noticing with him:

-Unprepared
-Out coached
-Takes no responsibility (throws everyone else under the bus)
-Stubborn (BVG)
-Same old game plan
-Worse in game coach I have seen (refuses to adjust)
-Plays scared when it's close

How many times has MS ran a trick play on 4th down and converted? Maybe all of them? That shows me how unprepared they are. I still go back to that quote from BK when he said they practice harder so the games are easy. I called that a problem when it happened. This team has the talent, just needs to let the right coaches call the shots. He needs to get rid of BVG, now. He needs to turn the play calling over to Sanford. BK needs to be a HC and that is it.

Ok let me breakdown your 7 items

-Unprepared - Yes and no. We start slow at times but we have showed up in big time games and just lost them at the end. That shows me he is prepared. We use to get blown out in big time games.
-Out coached- This I can agree with because we lose the late games.
-Takes no responsibility (throws everyone else under the bus)- I think he has changed this year. He hasnt thrown Vg under the bus yet or any players. He keeps saying its him and coaching.
-Stubborn (BVG)- Yes this is the biggest thing that pisses me off about Kelly.
-Same old game plan- Why fix if its not broken. Offense has been one of the best the last few years.
-Worse in game coach I have seen (refuses to adjust). Again i have to disagree with you. ND plays a much better 2nd half game and usually comes back from being down big. This shows great in game adjustments.
-Plays scared when it's close. This I agree with you.

So out of your 7 statements I agree with you on some and disagree on some. Overall understand your views.

jjc isn't this a fire a brian Kelly post? just saying that lou didn't do that much better than Kelly...and the times have changed...we shouldn't fire Kelly, he just needs to fire his dc and let Stanford call the plays.

idseer...what cant mention michigans progress? go cubbies

and I know idseer there is always next year, I'm a cubs fan loser

then let him go

he is nothing special

he recruited the players, the players play...hes just not getting the talent out of them

I understand jjc, but lou was in a different era...

and that Colorado game was a heart breaker

can u even remember a player getting suspended in lou,s era

jjc...im not a troll... just a ND fan pissed about the future of our program
How can you be pissed about the future. Pissed about the present is one thing. But the future is uncertain, no sense getting angry about that.

Saying Lou wasn't that much better than Kelly is pretty ridicuolous. Better winning percentage, better win loss record against ranked opponents, better bowl record, and a national title.

I'm not on a fire Kelly kick (yet). He does bear tremendous responsibility in year 7 for his lack of depth, and the decision to retain his DC. It should have been obvious after the Stanford game last year.

Kelly's goodwill is all but used up, IMO. Its no longer good enough to praise his efforts at rebuilding the program. You're either advancing or you're not, and 8-5, 9-4 aren't good enough. We have no conf. championship to play for success at ND is judged by winning national titles, or at least being in the playoffs.

Oh, and its Mike Sanford.

Feelin your pain, bro, but we're stuck with Kelly until 2021.

My gut feeling it's 'too soon' to be thinking about canning the guy that got us back into relevancy, again.

Now, if he decides to let Van Gorder hang around ... that's a different story, if there's a prominent coach in the wings to even consider replacing him.

is it him truly bringing them back to relevancy or is it the players performing?

2010 Brian Kelly 8–5 W Sun
2011 Brian Kelly 8–5 L Champs Sports
2012 Brian Kelly 12–1 L BCS National Championship Game† 3 4
2013 Brian Kelly 9–4 W Pinstripe Bowl 24 20
2014 Brian Kelly 8–5 W Music Bowl
2015 Brian Kelly 10-3 L Fiesta Bowl† 9 8

Let me help you out,

Lou Holtz winning percentage .765

A national title, wins in the Cotton Bowl 2x, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Sugar Bowl.

Brian Kelly .705.

Best bowl win is Music City Bowl against LSU after an 7-5 regular season.

There isn't a comparison.

Judging by the way you post, you are (1) almost certainly trolling, (2) I am pretty sure I am older than you.

Certainly old enough to remember Lou's years better than you. I'd say Lou brought probably 7-8 out of 10 of his years at ND for glory. 9 straight seasons ending with a major NY6 bowl appearance, winning 5 of them (a 6th was controversially taken away by a questionable clipping call). His winning percentage is third behind Leahy and Rock. Oh. I almost forgot. Our last national championship.

I liked the Holtz years. I also agree with almost all of your points. BUT, I can't let you get away with ignoring ARA and his 84% winning percentage (and his 2 national championships). ND's top coaches were as follows:
1). Rockne 2). Leahy 3). Ara 4). Holtz. (Maybe Harper in there)

Yes. It happened all the time. Mike Miller, Ricky Watters, Rodney Culver, Tony Brooks. Mike Stonebreaker. Shall I go on?

Oh I think Ara's on the Mt. Rushmore for sure. I think Lou's WP is slightly (a couple of points) higher than Ara's. Ara was coach while my dad was there too.

EDIT my bad, Ara's wp is third, (Im not counting the short term or interim coaches) its Leahy, Rock, Ara and Lou as as far as WP.

Yeah I'm going with troll. Nobody writes like that on a message board unless they're looking for people to bite. It's annoying as shit for these single-sentence incoherent posts.
