Ryan Williams released by Dallas Cowboys

Ryan Williams' ongoing knee problems have cost him a prime opportunity in the Dallas Cowboys' unsettled backfield.

The team announced Williams' release on Tuesday after the running back underwent another knee procedure in June.

A Cardinals second-round pick in 2011, Williams is a reminder of just how fragile the careers of promising running backs can be.

Play NFL Fantasy Football!

He was viewed as a future star before rupturing his patellar tendon in his rookie training camp. Unable to stay out of the trainer's room, Williams has managed just 164 yards on 58 carries (2.8 yards per carry) since then.

Despite that lack of production, the Cowboys had high hopes for Williams after signing him to a two-year contract with a $240,000 signing bonus in January.

"His name actually came up quite a bit (during the draft)," executive vice president Stephen Jones revealed in early May. "Many times we were looking at backs later in the draft that we compared to Ryan and didn't feel like they were as good as he was."

Now that the Cowboys have an open roster spot in the backfield, it will be interesting to see if they kick the tires on veteran free agent Chris Johnson.

Johnson told NFL Media's Rand Getlin on Monday that he is fully healthy, feels more explosive now than he was in 2013 or 2014 and is ready to step in immediately for a new team.

Getlin confirmed that Johnson's agent has been in contract with Dallas, though it's not known if the organization has reciprocated that interest.

In the meantime, Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden are poised to lead a committee attack behind the game's most dominant offensive line.

  • Gus Johnson (Source: SFA Football)
(KLTV) -
A Stephen F. Austin alumnus and 2011 graduate of Gilmer High School officially signed with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.

The SFA Lumberjack Football twitter account released a congratulatory message Monday afternoon for running back Gus Johnson, saying, "So how does everyone think @GusJohnson06 will look with the star on his helmet? Congrats Gus! #AxeEm".

Among Johnson's honors, he was 2014 SLC Player of the Year, and a four-time All-American (three of those first teams). He finished his career at SFA with 21 100-yard and four 200-yard rushing performances. Johnson was the school's all-time leading rusher with 3,907 yards and ranking fifth all-time in SLC history. He also ranks first all-time in SFA program history in season rushing yards (1,683 in 2014), season rushing touchdowns (23 in 2014), season scoring (138 points in 2014), career rushing touchdowns (51) and career total touchdowns (52), according to the university's football page.

Johnson will leave to join the team for training camp in Oxnard, California, Tuesday morning.

My money is still on either CJ2K, or Ray Rice ending up in a cowboys uni...still upset they didn't get AP...

Looks like Rotoworld agrees about CJ2K.

The oft-injured Williams couldn't stay out of the training room again, undergoing a knee procedure after he experienced swelling in June. The Cowboys added Stephen F. Austin UDFA Gus Johnson to take his place on the 90-man roster. Unless Chris Johnson or another veteran comes aboard, it looks like the Cowboys will roll with Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar as their top-three running backs.

Could always be wrong but I smell a very ugly committee. .... I think the 'Boys are convinced anyone can run behind their line. ....

Now this is logical, so it's probably not true.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Cowboys have "no interest" in free agent Ray Rice.

The Cowboys have been speculatively connected to Rice and Chris Johnson, but ESPN's Todd Archer previously tweeted those links are being made by "everybody but the Cowboys." Per the Star-Telegram's Charean Williams, the Cowboys "haven't ruled out signing a vet back, but not for at least a couple weeks." They want to see how Joe Randle, Darren McFadden, and Lance Dunbar look early in camp.

Y'know, it is still not totally out of the realm of possibility.

especially now that he is cheaper...

I'm pretty sure there's a 7 mil buyout at the end of this year as well. I still think something's gonna happen.

Of all the news blurbs I have read, I am surprised that none of them have mentioned that Randle is Jerry's hand-picked man. He loves the guy and I have seen nothing that says he's changed his mind on that.

One more comment on the AP contract: someone please tell me if I'm mistaken, but the way I read it the Vikes can conceivably keep him for this season, pay him the 7 mil at the beginning of the 2016 season, and then trade him if they decide to. Does this look plausible?

Don't know why they'd trade him after this year. If he's worth the contract, they will have already taken whatever PR hit was coming; if he's not, nobody else will want him anyway.

Yeah, that makes sense. But there's always that murky grey area...

From the Insanely Blown out of Proportion Dept.:

3:48pm: Tom Brady has authorized the NFLPA to appeal his case in federal court, a source tells Jim Trotter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Just prior to that, the NFL asked a federal court to confirm Brady’s suspension, Scott Soshnick of Bloomberg News tweets. The league filed its complaint in Manhattan.

Earlier today, the league announced that commissioner/arbitrator Roger Goodell has upheld Brady‘s full four-game suspension. The statement described that Brady actually destroyed his cell phone in order to hide incriminating evidence from NFL

Patriots destroy evidence that would suggest wrongdoing on their part?

NO WAY!
I won't believe it.
I think Brady bought his cell phone from the same tech company that installed Hernandez's home security system.
Or was it from the same Radio Shack that their asst coaches bought video cameras from?

Either way, their shit just randomly destroys itself at coincidental moments. Hopefully he paid the extra $11/month for the insurance plan on that cell so he could replace it easily........
