I am in a keeper league, we use contracts and auctions...

The way it works is that a player gets a 3 year contract but after the 2nd season of the player being a keeper, you have the option of extending the player... it is 5 units per season extending him

I own Paul Goldshmidt, and i am wondering how long i should extend him for...

Right now he has a contract of 5O- where the O means that i have the option to extend or not to extend...

if i dont extend him he will cost me 5 units this season but i lose him after this season.

1 year extension(2 more years of him)=10II-10 units for the next 2 seasons
2 year extension(3 more years of him)=15III- 15 units for the next 3 seasons
3 year extension(4 more years of him)=20IIII-20 units for the next 4 seasons
etc...

The catch is that if player is extended then he can never be dropped until the contract is expiring...

How long would you extend him for??

We start C,C,1B,2B,3B,SS,CI,MI,5OF,U,9P- no bench
total auction money is 260 units...
up to 10 keepers...

You want him for the long term, but obviously the longer you extend him for, the less cost savings you receive.

4 for 25 seems like the right balance between savings and the long term commitment for me so that is what I would take. He should be a first round player for the duration of that contract.

:agree:

How funny that fantasy matches reality, or vise versa, but does not match real life. My point, is that I think 4 years seems to be the best length limit for a contract regardless. JMO anyway.

I agree as well.
Feels great to have him at $5 but not as the risk of losing him (or paying 40 next year)

Thanks guys. I was leaning on 4 too. But in this league we have gotten burned with keeping people so long. After joe Mauer had his huge season, the owner extended him for 4 years. And Mauer just became a terrible keeper at the price. And nobody wanted him for the next years.

yeah, I'd use 10 on him to extend. the only thing that would make me not do that, is if there is a nice replacement you can eye up for the auction.
