All Time is fine, but the Modern Era is what it's all about.

I-A Wins 1946-2019

There are several dates that could be considered as the beginning of the Modern Era of College Football:

a) 1912 - the first year all the rules coalesced into the modern system of scoring, team size, downs & yards-to-go for first downs, etc. The main difference since then was the addition of the two-point conversion option.

b) 1937 - the first year that the NCAA started labeling certain teams as "Major College."

c) 1946 - the year many teams returned to the gridiron after sitting out the war years.

d) 1978 - the first year that Division I was divided into 1-A (now FBS) and 1-AA (now FCS).

e) 1997 - The first year of the BCS, in which a serious effort was made to match the top two teams head-to-head in a championship game at the end of the season.

Why. OU was around in the pre modern era. Why did you suck?

Oklahoma had some fantastic seasons in the Bennie Owen era. OU’s first 100 win coach, and for whom the field is named after. In fact the NCAA recognizes two seasons as National Champions, 1915 & 1918. OU does not.

Oklahoma wasn’t recognized as a state until 1907. There was no national media focus in this part of the country in those days. Most of what was accomplished in those early decades went largely unnoticed by everyone outside the region.
