Yep, there is no point in carrying Verlander's or Upton's salaries on a team that is going to be absolute horseshit for at least a couple of seasons.

Still stuck with a couple of boat anchor salaries next season (V-mart and Zimmermann). Really hoping Miggy can come back to something approaching full strength. Herniated discs in the back are no small thing to overcome, though.

I know his salary will still he there, but I see no reason for VMart to be one of the 13 position players the Tigers use. Sure, give him spring training ABs....if he isn't amazing, eat his salary and hope someone signs him for league minimum so Detroit gets that much taken off what they owe him.
I can see Zimmermann heading in that direction in a couple of years. He's a pitcher that will need some run support to be effective....he might be on the wrong team?

2018 Payroll obligations:

Cabrera - $30 million
Zimmermann - $24 million
VMart - $18 million
Sanchez - $5 million buy out
Kinsler - $11-12 million
Verllander (contract) - $8 million
Fielder (contract) - $6 million

Arbitration raises: around $20 million (figuring in a few non-tenders)

Thus, before Detroit figures out what other approx 15 players it will have on its roster, they are already in for around $122 million in salary and payouts. Trading Kinsler and a couple of arbitration eligible players could move it closer to $100 million. But that is still a lot of cash for nothing but a bum pitcher, a DH with a fading bat and perhaps a bad ticker, and a future HOF with a bad back and an unknown age.

Ok my personal opinion. Gardy is a mediocre manager, but could be the right one as a placeholder on a young and rebuilding team.

This hire is also contradictory. Why get an old school anti-analytics manager, if you are preaching sabremetrics and analytics as a GM in Avila? Everything he does makes no sense. Like last winter when he wanted to rebuild, but decided to keep all the assets, and shit manager until it was too late to salvage anything.

I like it. Always liked him in MN. Wanted Ozzie Guillen, but this works too.

Does it really matter? With the players Detroit will put on the field, Bobo Brazil would probably do just as well.

Ever seen the movie, "Angels in the Outfield"? If THAT happened to the Tigers....I think Detroit might win 70 games.

While I like what Gardenhire can do with young players, I tend to agree with you.

Agree, it might not matter but like a couple posts above he could be a nice hire to foster and mentor youth. Amazing how many people could give a crap about the Tigers now. Like we're all conditioned for another 20 years rebuild. My old man is an ardent Tigers fan and still a bit salty how things ended up this year. He just can't handle another 10-20 year rebuild. Granted he'd most likely be 6ft under by that point.

Makes no difference. Him, Tito, Brad, Sparky or John McGraw would lose atleast 180 games the next two years.

Hopefully it's only two seasons of circling the bowl. It could be four.

Nobody can win without pitching talent. And this organization has very little at the level that matters. With even less at AAA.

For the record, I don't like the hire.

Just don't really care enough to dislike it passionately. He's old, so it's not going to be for long anyway.

Yeah, I see this as Ralph Houk circa 1974-78. Veterans were aging out and it was clear it would be a young, rebuilding team. They bring in the vet manager with a decent reputation for developing young players and giving them the guidance needed to mature. When the team is close to being ready to win again, you bring in the manager you really want.

I think the White Sox are ahead of us, but they are not uncatchable. The Tigers have a nice core of youth. A good manager and good coaching can bring it together in a year or two.

Anibal Sanchez' option won't be picked up. Tigers will write him a check for $5mil and waive good bye.

(I thought Gardenhire was older than 59 too)
