The most pointless qualifying events are the restrictor plate tracks, especially Daytona where you don't lift at any point on the track. All it basically shows it which engine shop has their act together, as evidence by teammates qualifying so close to each other today. You can put in any driver into the car and it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. Hence why Michael Waltrip made a name for himself at plate tracks but was nothing more than a field filler everywhere else. He benefited from being a driver at a point in time where his team had the right combination of engine package to recover the most HP and throttle response lost as air passes through the restrictor.
