its too early to lock onto a player. we need to keep our options open . having this number 5 this season is as much a curse as it is a blessing
Shelton is great, but Instill like like the Williams guy from ECU. Not as athletic, but similar measurables and demands double teams and eats up OL at the LOS.
While Shelton is a better football player than Williams, your point about eating up blockers is key. This is what we ask a NT to do in a 3-4. So I'm not sure that paying for a premium player like Shelton with the 5th pick is wise only because in our scheme, he will be used as a space and player eater, not as a penetrating DL. If that's what we need, then taking a Williams in the later rounds is probably a wiser use of our draft picks.
Yeah but how many times have we heard that the NT is the key to a good 3-4 defense? I'm warming to to this idea for sure.
Oh, he is key. It just depends on how we use him. We have a new DC, so all bets are off, but historically, our NT wasn't asked to be a penetrating play maker, but a guy that occupied 2 or 3 OL so the DEs and ILBs could make plays. If that continues, then you have to wonder if Shelton is that kind of player, or, more importantly, is any NT worth a 5 th pick to us.
