If Williams is gone, and we get a deal for our 5th OR maybe even if we reach...
I think Shelton could be a game changer. He had solid tackling numbers last years.
But this year, he simply put together something NT's can't do. Forget the Ngata and Wilfork comparisons, that's great but really his numbers don't lie. And his teammates success doesn't lie either.
I personally would scratch my head to see an undersized OLB/DE taken at 5 because does that mean T.Murphy was a wasted pick?

i dont think murphy would be a wasted pick if you have a good 3 man rotation at the olb spots i would think we reached for a rotation guy though much like we did for jenkins

Murphy had no business being drafted where he was. We shouldn't compound that mistake by making decisions based on Murphy being picked in the 2nd round. Chalk that up to Bruce Allen and move on.

That being said, I'm with you on Ray and Gregory. Both very intriguing and both very small. I wish we could somehow get Rak on the cheap. That would pretty much allow us to do whatever we want on draft day.

Too much talent on the board to take Shelton at 5, but later? It would just depend if we got our RT in free agency.

i am sure we will address some holes in FA but these major areas need to be addressed by our draft . we have got to get off that crack called free agency and develop our own guys

Obviously I'm starting to show a bias, but to defend him, I'd assume he didn't give 100%.
He had a great practice, his buzz is up, no need to get hurt before the all important combine/pro-day.
Shelton COULD put himself in top 10 after the combine. Unfortunately we are probably reaching at 5, BUT if he turns out to become a Poe, Ngata or Casey Hampton...it was worth it.

Good point about the Senior Bowl practice being viewed by many as more important than the game.
I am sure we are taking a good look at Shelton, especially if we trade down a few spots.

I'd be mildly pissed. NT is a need but the secondary and the oline are a mess.

I forgot our new DC is a LB guy, so Shelton may not even be a thought unless we trade down.
Honestly, Orakpo when healthy is 10 sack guy who defenses focus on taking out of the game.
...So say we draft Gregory or Ray at 5. How likely is it, they will make the same impact a healthy Orakpo would? How likely is it as undersized DE's they get injured and destroyed in coverage? on the flip side, In 2 years maybe you have the next Aldon Smith.

With Shelton IMO, you finally get a real NT, that you've never had during your entire switch to the 3-4.
we've been using cofield who's played anywhere from 305-315. And various other DTs that were quick fixes at the core of the defense.

You have to look at what he accomplished and where he did it. He's asked to simply distract two people and open up plays for others...He nearly had 100 tackles and 10 sacks.
If you figure out how to get a pass rush, the secondary doesn't matter as much.

Barry could develop a guy like ray or Gregory, he could be pushing Scot hard to draft one of them two. Something tells me Barry would get mad at rak because he could be a lot better than he is

If you need a NT / interior DT, he's your guy. He's the real deal.

No problem with us taking him at #5. Especially if we sign Ordirck.
